What is an unlocked phone?
An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?
Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.
Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.
Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.
How do I set up my unlocked phone?
The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

I've noticed some reviews saying they had trouble opening the back of the phone to insert the battery. They are right that there are no direct instructions provided for that which certainly should have been included in a start-up manual. If you look at the phone with the screen towards you, in the top right corner of the phone has a small indent that should allow you to open the back with a low to medium amount of force.
The phone itself looks nice and runs pretty smoothly. I've maybe noticed a slight lag when opening some programs for the first time in a while. I've also noticed some widgets are not properly responsive if you don't open the program for that widget before hand. Not sure if that's an issue with the phone itself, the OS, or the apps, though it's likely not the apps.
If you have very basic phone needs, this phone is a prime choice especially since you don't have to buy a screen or case. As for the earphones, I would have gladly paid something like $3 less and not have received those.
Also, since there's a Pokemon GO craze going on right now, this phone can play the game but not on the augmented reality mode since I do not believe it contains a gyroscope.
I've only had the phone for about five days so I will update the review if my opinions change on it.
Have had the phone for almost three weeks now and am still very satisfied with my purchase. I forgot to mention what carrier I am using. I am on T-mobile and everything seems to work just fine, even though on the compatibility rating it says "partial" coverage for 3G and no coverage for 4G. I'm sure there is a very technical explanation for all this, but my phone usually tells me I'm on 3G or 4G when I'm not connected to wifi. Battery life seems to be pretty good.
Have had the phone for a month now and still like it a lot. I am having some issues with the headphone jack, however. When I plug in my headphones, sometimes it doesn't register to the phone for some reason and while sound comes out of the headphones, it doesn't cancel the sound coming out of the speaker. I've tested this with multiple pairs of headphones so it seems to be a problem with the outlet. If I plug the headphones in slowly then it works fine.
-8MP camera isn't that great, but isn't bad. 5MP front cam not that great either.
-Battery drains fairly quickly, but I'm still using it a lot to setup the phone. (my galaxy needed to be charged twice daily anyway, so no big difference)
-HATE the charging port being on top.
-Not as fast at running apps and internet, but not unbearable if you've just been working with an old 3G phone until the replacement came (BB Torch)
-Not as high def, but still works with 720p on YouTube. Looks good to me.
-LOW STORAGE... but I knew that when I bought it. Purchased SD card.
-Dual SIM, which is a nice option, imho.
I really expected a much cheaper phone than what I got, but I'm very impressed with this phone, which is why I'm rating it so highly. I would buy six of these rather than replace another Galaxy or buy iPhone (I AM aware that there are other options out there). My friends aren't much for reviews and are mostly all iPhone only, so I had to research this, and I'm glad this is what I got. They have more HD phones on the market that are newer, and I would buy those if I had more money. (BLU Pure XR seems to be the compatible one with newer smartphones).
I'll update this if anything changes. I'm actively looking for negative viewpoints, but so far, I'm just impressed.
Top international reviews
Decent phone, good speed, nice screen. Sometimes loses contact the cell network and needs to be rebooted.
In Dec 2017, an over-the-air upgrade was imposed by BLU and now there are three apps (swak news, mfn, androidrbx) that keep reinstalling themselves on the phone with broad permissions. Now various weirdness happens, such as the sound turning off at random, and an app called Haike News appearing overnight to display far east news events. Beware.
I'm furious. The phone worked perfectly before this obvious datamining trash update.
A 2018 May update appears to have removed the malware built into the OS.
Unwanted apps do not self-install anymore, and the phone does not waste your data plan.
But I'll never trust this phone (or any other unsupported by Lineage OS) anymore,
I loved the phone at first and rated it 5 stars, which I am now revising to 1 star due to the malware embedded in the unremoveable OS update.
Even after complete factory reset and full security lockdown the phone auto-installs various malware applications as soon as internet access is enabled. One of these, called androidrbx disables the wifi and uses up the mobile data allowance.
Still no lineageOS support. Too bad, it was such a nice, affordable phone. I guess the takeaway is never buy any phone without root access and lineageOS support.
Original review (before malware infested OS update)
For the price, I think this an amazing deal. Not carrier-locked, so it works with any GSM provider. Any two GSM providers to be exact: it has one regular sized SIM slot and one micro sized, the two can be populated and used at the same time.
I often use it for navigation (google maps, sometimes OsmAnd), web browsing, reading e-mail, Ingress (a GPS-based game), and VoIP calls.
Meanwhile I often play music through a bluetooth headset, either from the SD card or youtube.
Battery gets me through the day, I only need the external battery pack for extreme use (Ingress)
I don't often use the camera, it's adequate for random snapshots. There's also a front-facing one for videoconferencing.
It's much bigger than what I'm used to, but that's just me. The power port is positioned as on a tablet (at the top, upside down microUSB port)
It does not have enough sensors for some of my luxury needs: to show a compass, Google Sky, or VR. AR apps work great though.
I found no straightforward instructions to root or install Cyanogen mod (or whatever it's called nowdays)
Because the problem is with a system app, the malware apps just reinstall every morning, and return even if you do a factory reset. Short of rooting the phone and installing a custom ROM (which currently involves rooting using a notoriously shady app) there is no current solution to this problem.
Not only can I not recommend this phone, I would actively discourage people from buying it or other BLU products until such time as they provide a fix or recall and replace the phone.
It is a pity, too because it was quite a good phone for everday calls and light web surfing. Now, if a solution cannot be provided, I am going to have to just recycle the phone and buy something more secure. I eould have given it four stars before this fiasco.
Other than that, it's pretty much perfect. Apps load lightning fast, battery has sufficient capacity, and the phone connect just fine to president's choice network (PC uses bell network).
It took almost 6 months before the internal memory filled up and the phone was unusable. I have a 32G card in the expansion slot with it set to be the 'default' write disk. The expansion card had less than 10gigs used. It turns out that the phone writes to the internal memory first, then to the expansion. Apps are written to the internal. I tried to delete/ uninstall some things to free up some memory but the pop up window that alerts you of the problem kept popping up, preventing me from doing anything. I was forced to format the device, loosing some of my stuff (A lot was previously saved elsewhere). After formatting, the phone showed 6gigs used (of 8). I formatted again and same problem. It's now been 6 weeks since the format and I'm starting to get memory warnings. I haven't been able to install any apps. I contacted BLU and got a 'cut and paste' response with instructions on how to make the expansion card the default. I'm now shopping for another phone...
I went into my purchase knowing that I was a very casual phone user; I use all of the main social media apps: Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. and maybe a handful of other apps- so I didn't expect the performance to affect me very much, even if it was poor. I was wrong however, as after about 4-5 days of use, I started to notice how long it would take me to do normally quick tasks. Opening an app for example would take a few seconds longer, apps would commonly crash with no way to get around it, and if you ever have any more than say 3-4 apps open at a time - you're in for trouble, and everything comes to a crawl.
I understand that it's probably the measly 1 GB of RAM that I was well aware of, but it just isn't enough for what a phone of its size, and timing needs, so for that, I don't think it has a place in the market.
The phone itself is VERY nice (not just for the price). It's well built, comes with a case and screen protector, and everyone that has seen is loves the look and feel. Also, the battery is pretty good so far. not once have I even seen the 'low battery' alert, and I stream music on both ways to work, while surfing the web and social media.
One other issue that I did not see in any reviews is the fact that this phone does NOT pick up LTE/4G network. No matter how good the signal was, all I could get is 3G. It's fine for what I do, but when I'm paying a cell carrier for their LTE service, I think it's prudent to have a phone that can take advantage. This is a BIG issue for me.
All in all, it's a good phone. Maybe a good entry level phone for a parent or grandparent who wants a camera (good quality), and to watch some videos - and won't be running more than 1 app at a time, but even then, there are a couple of phones by BLU and Xiaomi that are slightly more expensive but MUCH better specs. As I search for a replacement for my replacement, I WILL still consider BLU, based on their aesthetics alone - I just need to be more picky when it comes to 'what's under the hood' so to speak.
However, you do get what you pay for, and 11 months in the phone started acting up. This is apparently a known issue where the phone will load fine but you'll only see a black screen with the back button present. I reset the phone the factory settings and it was fine. Until the next day, where it was black screen again. I eventually gave up on the phone and upgraded to a Moto E4. **update: The E4 was twice the price of this one yet only lasted 2 months before problems necessitated yet another upgrade. I have give this little Blu credit; it lasted almost a year by comparison.**
As far as a starter phone goes, it's decent. Anyone looking for a "test" smart phone won't find better than this one as far as the price goes. If you're looking for something more permanent, best look a few dollars higher. Again, it's a cheap phone, but it's not bad for what you're paying. Had it lasted a bit longer, I would have stuck with it. Simple, cheap, but short-lived. Know what you're buying before you click.
Good basic smartphone. Call quality is excellent. Texts no problem. WiFi works well. Had some difficulty removing the back to install card. Only real quibble. Not expecting an S9 at this price but you really do get a lot. Can't comment on Data performance as this is paired with a Petro Canada prepaid calling plan that does not include Data. Good phone for a ninth grader if you don't already have a phone to hand down
Will never buy anything from this company again.
