Baby-Led Feeding: A Natural Way to Raise Happy, Independent Eaters Paperback – Illustrated, March 13, 2018
Enhance your purchase
The popular and trusted guide to starting your baby on solid foods, newly revised with the most up-to-date information for today’s new parents.
What if you could skip the tiny jars and pouches of bland baby food in favor of a more natural, flavor-filled, and family-friendly transition to solid foods? Baby-led feeding (also known as baby-led weaning) is just that. Feeding your baby a variety of healthy, wholesome solid foods, rather than relying solely on purees, is thought to promote motor skills and establish lifelong healthy eating habits.
Author, food director at Real Simple magazine, and former food editor at Parents and Health Jenna Helwig gives parents easy-to-follow introductions for this popular feeding method. With more than 100 ideas and recipes, this bright, photo-driven book includes chapters on the benefits of this approach, when and how to get started, essential safety and nutrition guidelines, frequently asked questions, basic fruit and vegetable prep, more complex finger foods, and family meals. The newly revised edition contains updated information regarding common allergens and substitutions, helpful new content like sample menus, and new recipes featuring a wider range of flavors. All recipes have been reviewed by a registered dietitian and include nutrition information to ensure a healthy mealtime.

Broccoli and Ham Egg Muffins from Baby-Led Feeding
Makes 12 mini muffins
These savory little bites have a lot going for them. They’re ideal any time of day—breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner. They’re portable: Tote them to daycare or just out and about. And they are also easily customizable. Instead of broccoli and ham finely chop 1¼ cups cooked veggies and/or meat to use up what’s in your fridge. If your mini-muffin cups are on the larger side, this will make 12 muffins; if the cups are smaller, you may be able to make more.
Directions:
1 Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray 12 mini-muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray.
2 Stir together the broccoli and ham. Divide evenly among the muffin cups.
3 In a medium measuring cup, whisk together the eggs and pepper to taste. Pour the eggs over the broccoli mixture in the muffin cups, dividing them evenly.
4 Bake for 25 minutes, or until set. Cool in the muffin cups for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Make Ahead: Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Serve cold, at room temperature, or briefly reheated.

The only reasons I gave it 4 stars was because of the weird page that wasn’t completely cut. I like all my books to be a very good condition and the pages being like bugs me…. It’s just one of those things I can’t help. Oh well I’ll try to ignore it!

The only reasons I gave it 4 stars was because of the weird page that wasn’t completely cut. I like all my books to be a very good condition and the pages being like bugs me…. It’s just one of those things I can’t help. Oh well I’ll try to ignore it!

Pros:
1. The introduction is short & sweet. It gets right to the point for the reasons behind baby-led feeding/baby-led weening, what the difference is & why parents like BLF. It's two pages. I barely got through 1 chapter of a book about BLW & I wanted to put myself in the oven. I don't have time for that.
2. The recipes include time to prep/cook, whether the food freezes well, how long it keeps in the fridge & nutrition info
3. The book also includes general nutrition info, like calorie goals, essential vitamins & a daily meal outline.
4. The book shows sizes of how big to cut foods - VERY helpful. I was so worried my kid was going to choke if I cut things too big/small. But this book has pictures of many different foods, what sizes to cut things, & how to change the size as the kid gets older
5. Some recipes evolve for older kids. A simple recipe for a 6mo will include new ingredients for the 12mo version, a great way to keep introducing your kid to new foods. Many of the recipes are adaptable.
6. This book does not shame you for serving pureed food, unlike other BLW books. Some kids do better with softer foods or purees. Or parents grab pouches when they are on the go because it's just easy. And IT'S FINE! This book does not shame any parents for the choices they make regarding their kids food. It even includes recipes for different pureed foods. Sometimes a fruit smoothie with secret spinach is the only way my kid is going to eat a vegetable. And he loves it!
However, the later recipes were pretty much awful. I know that food taste is highly subjective, but I grew up Southern with many good home cooks, and all these recipes are both weird and bland. I've learned to avoid nutritionist cookbooks who forget food needs flavor and salt, not just protein+carb+healthy fat. This falls squarely in that category. Some were just laughable, like lamb chop lollipops and grapefruit scallops. Others were odd, with canned tuna +broccoli+capers. My advice: totally buy this book. But once they are eating on their own, skip the last two sections and cook whatever you cook regularly. Oh also, don't also buy the Baby Led Weaning book and this one - they are almost entirely the same recipes and content, but with stricter rules - save your money.
Top reviews from other countries

It contains really useful information on important topics like gagging/choking and important nutrients, although I would always recommend parents go and do additional research on these things to equip themselves with the relevant knowledge. I have shared this book with several friends with younger children.
I did make a few of the recipes but mainly used them to for inspiration, adapting to what ingredients we had available. As we don’t eat meat some recipes weren’t suitable for us but this didn’t put me off and the overall approach and information made it a worthwhile purchase. It’s probable all this information could be found online but I found it helpful and reassuring to have it all in one place and from a more reputable source rather than all the stuff online which can be intimidating when you’re starting out weaning your first child.
One feature I used the most was the page with how to cut finger foods for babies by age, this was so helpful.
