C. J. Box is the author of over twenty Joe Pickett novels, as well as several stand-alone novels and a story collection. He has won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoe, and Barry Awards, as well as the French Prix Calibre .38, and has been a Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist. A Wyoming native, Box has also worked on a ranch and as a small-town newspaper reporter and editor. He lives with his wife on their ranch in Wyoming. His books have been translated into twenty-seven languages. He’s an executive producer of ABC TV’s Big Sky, which is based on his Cody Hoyt/Cassie Dewell novels, and executive producer of the Joe Pickett television series for Spectrum Originals.

She takes a promotion to Chief Investigator. Most of the police force was male, and she was boss to the deputies. There was an oil craze, and the North Dakota town was maxed with oil workers. Fracking had turned the small town into a town overrun with people. Then, a drug gang from South America came to town to corner the drug market. Cassie has found a very challenging job.

Mr. Box captured me early on with the Joe Pickett series and I have attempted to read each and every book he had authored. I read the Cody Hoyt story, but I apparently missed the one of his demise. That will be a new project four me. Too, I want to read where "The Lizard" finally meets his end. Hope it will come to pass soon. Recommend this novel to anyone loving an adventure and suspense, as you desires will certainly be fulfilled. Just cannot say enough about Mr. Box and his adventurous exploits with his computers.

I have read every novel that CJ Box has published and thoroughly enjoyed. Both the Joe Pickett series and the stand-alones. Badlands is a sequel to The Highway and I strongly recommend reading The Highway first.
Badlands is not only fast moving with a cast of great characters, but it is also dark. Badlands is not for the faint of heart.
Badlands is the type of book that you never want to put down. For me, I enjoyed the combination of a law enforcement thriller and the life style of North Dakota.
Enjoy Badlands. I truly enjoyed it. And remember, read The Highway first.

Yes, a really interestingly convoluted story, where you are allowed into the deeper recesses of the mind of the the main protagonist (Cassie Dewell ), and how she sifts through everything in order to focus on the crucial information to be sought in a manner that is more profound than in any other book I can recall ever reading. In fact many of the characters in this story have been provided with personalities far beyond the stereotypically shallow sketchiness that other authors may have provided them with. An excellent read which transported me to Grimstad - North Dakota - so convincingly that I swear that I could smell the very air of the place.

I can't give this the full 5 stars. It's a decent storyline with plenty of pace to keep you interested. However, Cassie Dewell's character has not been developed as well between this and the previous novel in the same way that Joe Pickett became compulsive for me immediately. Yes, she's a non-assuming, good person, but she has gone from rookie investigator to senior investigator in just two years - really? The North Dakota setting is nowhere near as fascinating as the Wyoming of Joe Pickett and the fracking industry that forms the background to the sudden growth of an otherwise dying small town does not receive the same level of environmental scrutiny as I have come to enjoy from many of the Joe Pickett books. There is another in the series that I have already bought and will read, but I am not just as enamoured of this series as I am of Joe Pickett - he's a hard act to follow. The other annoying thing is the number of typos in a book published at this level - most especially when a new paragraph begins with a person's name and only the first name has a capital first letter. Sorry, that's sloppy writing/proof reading and it's so pervasive throughout the book that it is indefensible.

I love the Joe Pickett Series so decided to try this book. I loved it. Great characters and a clever story. Wish I had realised that The Highway was the previous novel to this, but never mind, reading The Highway now anyway. Also looking forward to the next Joe Pickett in March 2016. I love the way C J Box can completely pull you into his stories and keep you reading well into the night. Even though I knew each time that Joe had another novel, I still wondered if he would make it through some of the books, they are so intense. Badlands is just as good. You can almost feel the cold and smell the fresh mountain air :) C J Box is my favourite author from the last few years.
