Art and Writing Tips by
L. Ron Hubbard • Orson Scott Card • Craig Elliott
“Magic Out of a Hat” by L. Ron Hubbard: From a challenge to write a story inspired by a completely uninspiring wastebasket, Ron provides timeless insight on generating a solid story idea and also reveals a bit of the effusive spirit that he brought to the magic of writing.
“On Magic Out of a Hat” by Orson Scott Card: Card discusses and expands upon Hubbard’s article breaking down the techniques Ron used to create a story from a simple object. Card also explores the history of memorable speculative fiction and what makes it great.
“The Rewards of Imagination” by Craig Elliott: In addition to his fine-art work, Craig has had a hand in designing many of today’s most popular animated films. Here Craig expounds on the value and need for creative artists and their impact on our society.
On an entire city rocketing through space, bursting at the seams after only eleven years, Pensa Dee and her precious daughter, her momma and her sisters and their families are heading for a new world.
Pensa Dee lost her husband, thanks to his tomfoolery and a cracked seal, but when her heart isn't breaking, she’s getting along well enough with her baby girl at home and her databases at work. At least, until she notices a glitch in the nav system that hints she and her family and the ship aren’t where them-in-charge say they are.
Suddenly, there’s secrets about: some small and some big and some downright ugly, one maybe having to do with her husband’s death, maybe meaning it wasn’t so accidental after all.
Pensa Dee doesn’t want to believe it. She doesn’t want to be involved. She really doesn’t want to be a hero, because the heroes all seem to end up dead.
But she can’t seem to keep quiet either…
Something’s rotten in Ipurra, and Princess Shalee hopes it’s not her own family, but she’s not convinced. Her younger sister is a spoiled brat, her brother, the crown prince, a drunk and a bully, and her father encourages them both.
When the king demands a huge party for Shalee’s birthday, she must organize the feast, attend it, and pretend she enjoys it while preventing the local nobles and visiting royalty from killing each other. Piece of cake.
Except she never gets a piece of her own cake because the neighboring country declares war. And they have vengeful dragons on their side for Ipurran nobles have been killing dragons for as long as Shalee remembers. Now the enemy is coming for her father’s dragonscale throne.
Her sister on the run, her life on the line, and dragons determined to wipe out the dragon slayers, Shalee must save the dragonscale throne, her family, and herself...
(Previously published as Crowns Peak #1 - Creeper)
Slavers have come to Crowns Peak.
For Creeper, a street urchin living rough in the slums, that fact is just one more in a long list of everyday realities she has to deal with. But what if there were a better place for her, a place where she might be safe? Safe from the coming winter, from the older littles who bully her, from the king’s guards who want to take her, and perhaps even from the slavers.
Creeper might just have found such a place… within the palace walls, surrounded by the very guards she has been taught to fear. But better in here than out there. Or is it? Secrets swirl within those walls, and old hatreds bubble close to the surface. She'll have to navigate very carefully if she is to remain safe, remain welcome, remain hidden.
Outside the walls, however, the littles from Creeper’s old life are being snatched up one by one…
In a city that’s both achingly familiar and yet darkly different from the one she’d left behind, Ava meets all her old friends, now settled in their new lives without her: King Braedon and Queen Pamla, the monarchs desperate to keep their city safe and their daughter out of harm’s way; Jon and James, the guardsmen sworn to uphold the law; Headmistress DuCharme, former mentor and confidante now turned bitter and mistrustful; and Dirk, the old friend and, perhaps, if the gods smile upon Ava, something more...
But a new shadow has landed in Crowns Peak along with Ava, and innocents are dying one by one. Is it Ry, grown unhinged with his demon-born power? Is it an old foe, taking cold-burning revenge? Or is it some other force of corruption seeking a way to the surface?
With two young apprentices to protect in addition to all the people she loves, and an ever-suspicious tail just waiting for her to make a mistake, Ava’s will and new skills will be tested to their utter limits as she struggles to save her erstwhile home from disaster.
They are her family and she would fight to the death to keep them safe.
But soon the Others return—creatures from the old stories and legends, aliens that used to kidnap the People for their own mysterious purposes. Speaker is their next victim, imprisoned aboard their alien craft, being carried away from her home. She must find a way to protect all the kon piset… except, the Others resemble Speaker more than her own family ever had, and they have proof that Speaker is not of the People, but human, like them.
Now, faced with the Others’ plans to enslave the kon piset and every other alien planet in what they consider Syndicate Space, Speaker will learn to fight hidden threats and pervasive lies instead of tooth and claw as she battles for a better world—not just on Harmony Home but throughout human-controlled space.
