“Returning to her beloved Valdemar universe, Lackey opens her new series at a pivotal time in the history of Valdemar, when the education of Heralds is changing and dangers from other lands are felt in the court and on the training field. Series fans will enjoy the variations on a familiar theme, while enough information is presented for first-timers to discover a world of high adventure and individual courage. Highly recommended.” —Library Journal

I love Lackey’s fluid writing, the way she draws a reader into the world she’s created in Valdemar. For me, reading her books is an experience, one that is practically spiritual for me. This experience was no different with this novel.
Mags and Amily are among my favorite characters in the saga, and I loved getting so much of them in this book. The murkiness of Mags’ past left him, and readers, with so many questions, and this book answered many of them. Because Mags is so much of a favorite for me, I loved watching his character grow and come into his own. It’s a great end to this series and part of the overall Valdemar saga, and it’s a great lead into the next series.
My recommendation: If you are a fan of Valdemar, it’s a must read. If you are a fan of high fantasy, I suggest starting at the beginning. There’s a great chronological book order list on the Fandom page for Valdemar.
But, he still does not know about his parents and where they came from.
He is interviewed by various members of the Collegium about the events of his kidnapping.
To ease tensions in the Court and Collegium, Mags is going circuit riding with Jakyr, the Herald who helped Dallon get Mags from the Slave Mine. Also, Amily, Lena and Bear are leaving the Collegium: Bear as a Green robed Healer, Lena on her bard journey, and Amily as an assistant to Bear. They are not leaving Haven together, but will meet up on the Circuit. Unknown by the 5, Master Bard Lita will join as the driver of the van.
Some folk do not like to read 'musings', but I do. Ms. Lackey uses Mags musings to build the story.
Once the group arrive at the caves (Bastion) and begin their work, Jakyr and Mags discover that some villages and villagers do not feel Haven is looking after them. Herald Jakyr and Herald Trainee Mags have to enforce the law.
The six members of this group are living in the caves. Mags finds something belonging to one of his parents.
Also, Bey, Mags' cousin, shows up. Mags gets the history of his parents.
The story ends in a rush of action. The six and Bey survive.
A very good story.

The main character wanders aimlessly through a non-existent plot, secondary characters are only decorative with nothing substantial to tell about plot or characters. The whole thing looks and reads like Lackey's exploration of the character from a forgotten notebook. And that is where it should have stayed.
Conclusion: Don't waste your money, reread some earlier books of hers you already have or
