4.0 out of 5 stars Be Patient And You'll Be Rewarded
By CB Review on September 18, 2019
**Minor Spoilers Throughout** If you're this far in the series, you have a sense of what's going on and don't need a lot of lead up, so I'll cut to the chase. At first, I didn't like this TPB. My initial reactions were negative: I thought this was Tom King treading water, reverting to what he does best (contained short-form stories), and not moving the ball forward. But upon re-read and thinking about it for more than half a second and actually reflecting instead of just reacting, there's actually a lot of valuable, rich storytelling here.

The conceit of the volume, which is explained fairly early on (but minor spoilers), is that Batman has been captured and exposed to some updated version of the Scarecrow's fear serum. Each issue represents a different subconscious exploration by the Bat, ultimately leading to the final issue, where he confronts his greatest fear, figuring out where he and Selina went wrong. Admittedly, some issues are throwaways (like one spent on Lois/Selina hanging out), but each issue usually contains several layers that say a lot more than you'd expect. The overlay of Bruce as a boy, and the psychotic villain Matthew from a previous Tom King story speaks a lot to the guilt, fear, and love of violence Bruce carries deep down, or the mix of Professor Pyg hiding Batman's son, Damian, under the surface, (perhaps) alluding to the violent and uncontrollable nature of his son that Damian in some way inherits from his father. But finally, what made me give the volume more credit was the last issue, and the dance between the Bat and the Cat. Here, King, finally hits an inflection point from the downward spiral by Batman post-wedding, by letting Bruce be the detective he is, even in this drugged state, as he finally begins to deduce the reasons the Cat left him, and why those reasons weren't what they seemed to be.

All in all, it's not perfect. There is some frustration as it slows the overarching story to a crawl. And there are minor gripes about the quality of the paper (which seems rougher and cheaper than the first 7 TPBs, but are similar to TPBs 8 and 9), and weird cover formatting (for some reason it matches volumes 8 and 9 in color but does not have a "10" on the spine--was it that hard to make it match? weird??? see attached photo).

But there's a lot going on in this volume, if you're patient, and I think when King's run is said and done, this will have been an interesting, introspective turning point for his interpretation of Batman.
