The Joker has been murdered. His killer is a mystery. Batman is the World's Greatest Detective. But what happens when the person he is searching for is the man staring back at him in the mirror?
THE JOKER IS DEAD.
There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery.
Problem is, Batman can't remember...and the more he digs into this labyrinthine case, the more he starts to doubt everything he's uncovering.
So who better to set him straight than...John Constantine?
The problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people's heads even more. So with John's "help," the pair will delve into the sordid underbelly of Gotham as they race toward the mind-blowing truth of who murdered the Joker.
Batman: Damned is a groundbreaking supernatural horror story told by two of comics' greatest modern creators: Brian Azzarello (Dark Knight III: The Master Race, 100 Bullets) and Lee Bermejo (Hellblazer, Joker).
This hardcover volume collects Batman: Damned #1-3 and features a behind-the-scenes extras gallery with an afterword by Brian Azzarello.

As far as the actual product goes, this is a very wide book as far as comics go. If you're a collector like myself, be ready for that.
(SPOILER ALERT:) Much of the narrative will seem familiar to fans of the character, yet there are some notable divergences from tradition. Wayne’s parents are in a failed marriage, and Thomas is cheating on Martha. I can accept that as hellish (it is certainly disturbing to read), but the affair doesn’t really impact the current level of the story. There is also some attempt to tie in DC’s various supernatural heroes in to the arc. Most seem to be treated well. However, there are very original representations of Etrigan (he’s looking incongruously human here) and (as revealed in the apparatus at the end) the Enchantress, who seems to be the cause of all the darkness surrounding the Waynes. Lastly, I have mixed feelings on the end. It’s not clear if Batman’s final choice changes history or if the events of the book were all fantasy. Either way, there are no real changes created here. We are simply returned to the status quo like any other arc.
In closing, do be careful ordering this from Amazon. My copy arrived looking like it had been dropped at one point. The bottom corner at the spine was dented, and damage appeared internally.
This is a mystery story with supernatural elements, but it’s also a character study of Batman/Bruce Wayne and (unexpectedly) a retelling of his origin that is so good that I’d love to see it adopted and added to the mythology, at least in further stories in this new DC Black line. This new retelling adds twists that dramatically change the Batman character without contradicting anything previously told, and it would be really interesting to see these twists examined further.
This can definitely be read as a stand alone story—and that’s what I thought it was through most of my reading—but it’s actually a direct sequel to the Joker graphic novel done by this same creative team a few years back; while Joker is a good book, the story, writing and art are all even better in this book—especially the art. The art in this book is some of the best I’ve seen, and it is consistent and beautiful the entire length of the book.
To me, this book is up there with Year One and Dark Knight Returns as one of the best Batman stories ever. While the book has an end, it also has a setup for a volume three, and I’m already looking forward to it.

Art work is excellent though.

Batman learns the Joker is dead, the witness is a hobo who is not a hobo, and the Justice League Dark cast in completely different roles. I have no I death why. Also he is seeing visions that young family life was not as happy as we previously remembered.Constantine is annoying narrator/guide on Batmans journey.
I have to say I have always hated horror stories, I did figure me liking Batman so much, would even the scales. Unfortunately it did not. I especially hate the ending. A great as the art work is I would not recommend this.

The story is very hard to follow, it's very stop start and doesn't really go anywhere which is a common issue when dc adds magic to a batman story. I was hoping it would follow the same style in writing as "joker" as this is kind of a sequel to that amazing book but it's miles off, except for the last couple of pages.
Still well worth a purchase for the artwork alone though!

At the time of purchase I should have listened to the other reviews about average story etc.
My verdict is if you love comic artwork this is a winner but if your looking purely for a great story then I'd advise to avoid.

Read if you enjoyed Joker but just so you have.
Amazing art by Bermejo.
