~This is not a book, but rather a graphic novel…it’s a sophisticated comic book. The Batman is one of the classic, all-time favorites of most all superhero comic book readers. There is a series of DC Comics titled "Elseworlds"…these tale take a commonly known main character and place him, or her, in an alternative reality. I like Batman…I really like the Steampunk genre. So, it was a given that I’d need to acquire this and add it to my personal steampunk library. It is a Victorian era story, dealing with another well-known character…Jack the Ripper. It is a classic Batman story…matters not if the villain is The Joker, Catwoman, Bane, The Penguin, or any number of baddies…in this story, it just happens to be Jack the Ripper. The Dark Knight does everything in his power to bring them all to justice.
~It is a good story…the artwork is outstanding. Both Batman and Jack are creatures of the night, so, much of the art is dark. It adds to the overall feeling of a Victorian night…only illuminated by dimly lit gaslights.
~If you like Batman, if you like Steampunk, if you like Victorian era stories, get it, read it, collect it.

Brian Augustyn's "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" is one of the first official "Elseworld" versions of Batman. Augustyn is not Frank Miller or Alan Moore or Grant Morrison, so the more "edgy" or experimental elements are lacking, but this remains a solid reimagining of Batman that is contextually believable and highly enjoyable. The focus on "Jack the Ripper" as he moves to the States and settles in Gotham, Augustyn also gives us a new (yet familiar) origin of Batman. While this art does feel of the late 1980s, the strength of Mike Mignola & P. Craig Russell does still shine through. The designs are also very compelling considering the limitations of time period in which this is set. While only ground-breaking in being the first Elseworld, it is excellent in its complete competences in both art and storytelling.

This is the first in a series called elseworlds where heroes are placed in alternative times and settings. The story is about a 19Th century Batman hunting Jack the Ripper as he continues his killing spree in Gotham city. I found this a fun and engaging read. A DVD movie was recently released based on this work and I must say that while I enjoyed the show more than the book I encourage you to read it because there are many differences right down to who done it.📚

Ive been reading and enjoying Gotham by Gaslight for decades. Mike Mignola, who went on to create the cult favorite Hellboy, had a lot of early success with DC comics. Gotham by Gaslight puts the Dark Knight against Jack the Ripper. DC ran these stories as "elseworlds" that exist outside the normal DC continuity. Mignola is one of the most influential artists of the 80's DC comics continuity. His art, simplified and dark is to comics what Edgar Allen Poe is to literature. RIchly textured and just a joy to look at, Gotham by Gaslight is noit only one of Mignolas best, its also one of my favorite Batman stories of all time.,

A short, somewhat obvious what-if murder-mystery set on the streets of 19th century Gotham, pitting Batman against Jack the Ripper. A hyped-up Batman tale that was at least entertaining but did not live up to the buzz. It had the potential to be a good series; Batman adapts very well to the era.

* Dull retread of the anachronism framework. Read "A Yankee at King Arthur's Court" if you want a good a fish out of water tale that goes clever instead of insipid.
* SPOILER*SPOILER: Of course it was his uncle. The first panel in which that ersatz character appeared, you knew it. I mean, I almost stopped reading there, it was so clumsy and obvious and dumbly thwacked out. POW!
*Serviceable art at best, it did not take that fish and transform its otherworldliness into a phantasm of hallucinatory visuals as the best in the anachronism genre do so amazingly.
*I glanced at the price, saw a zero, assumed that would be the price, and decided to take a gamble with my time. Oops. I know I can be light on detail management, but I infer a little bait and switch to get me to spend 99 cents. Shame on me, and shame on Amazon for not making it manifest they were peddling crap content for whatever profit they could make.

Have this in physical format, but since it was at a low price, I opted to download the kindle version as well. This graphic novel came out around the same time as the Michael Keaton movie, so it's been out there for a while. It sets Batman against Jack the Ripper, and even though that's interesting in itself, I found the most enjoyable part of the story to be the setting of Batman in another era, it has a very mysterious feel to it, and the character design is great.
