From a cave in the forest
came a “MUNCH, MUNCH, CRUNCH!”
as Bear and his friends
all nibbled on their lunch.
Bear and his friends are munching on their lunch, when all of sudden… Bear feels something wiggling and wobbling in his mouth. Oh, no! What can it be? It’s Bear’s first loose tooth!
In the first Bear book in three years, Bear’s friends ease his concerns about his wiggly, wobbly tooth and help him understand losing a baby tooth is perfectly natural. This funny and reassuring story will delight anyone who’s ever had a loose tooth.

About the authors
My life is a series of lessons and moments that see me to the next lessons and moments. Some moments are sweet, some scary, some a blur gone too fast and forever missed. I write for children because all of these steps started there, in childhood, and that sense of wonder, keen curiosity, and the ability to see things much kinder and more magical than they actually were, fades as time passes and years and experience claim your naivety. For me it is a feeling only rekindled when I am creating books, stories and poetry.
My children, family and friends are a great inspiration to me, and the support of my readers is a tremendous honor. It is always my desire to entertain children and encourage them to think about and explore their world, and the worlds beyond, embrace creativity, and love learning for the duration of their life. Knowledge comes through words, so for me literacy is the foundation of education, and it bears the fruit of intelligent and empathetic citizens of this world and humanity.

Overall, the images were lovely and my son loves bear and her friends. My son specifically asked for this book and I am sure it will work for when the time comes. I have not found another loose tooth book to pick up so this is what we will use
What I loved about this book from the bits in the preview was that it talked about how the loose tooth felt in his mouth, what he was worried about, and nobody was menacing bear when they were talking about how ways that the tooth could potentially be gotten out quicker. I would have preferred a book with humans in it so that it would be easier for him to relate the experiences to himself, however all of the ones I previewed had more dramatic and scary looking caricatures of people and their schemes for tooth extraction. For a kiddo who's already had a history of being scared of medical providers and people in general, as my son does, I found those to be less desirable then cute Mr. Bear here.
What I wish I had seen in a review or in a preview was the part about the fairy taking his tooth and leaving berries, which is bear's correlate to the tooth fairy. When I was a young child, finding out that there really was no Santa, no tooth fairy, and no Easter Bunny had me personally feeling lied to. I felt like it was only pretend if everybody knew up front that the pretending was going on. So I made a decision as a parent that I would always be upfront with my kiddos, whatever their cognitive abilities might be. I give gifts for lost teeth, but it is known up front I do it, and for my daughter at least, it is a game to see if I can get the tooth out of her room and the gift in without getting caught. But she can understand all of that. I'm honestly not sure how to help my son understand that just because a fairy appears in a book doesn't make it real. Because he is very literal and he does not yet pretend, and he is non verbal so I'm not sure what goes on with him and imagination. He mostly talks about concrete things on his speech device.
So for me, I'm not too sure what to do with this book. I think most of it describes things well and talks about concerns he would have, and while I don't want to censor it, I'm honestly tempted for him to tape the pages with the fairy together and do some "editing". My apologies, Karma and Jane if I do :) I haven't decided. But just a heads up for anybody else that would rather not have that in there for whatever reason. I think it's a super cute book, and if it were for my daughter, we'd just have a conversation about it being pretend and why some people do that as a tradition. But for my son, this is an area where it is harder for me to gauge what he understands, and that is why I would have preferred if the fairy weren't in here.
The newest Bear book is once again the perfect combination of great writing and awesome illustrations. Karma Wilson always has a wonderful melody and tempo to her writing with stories that are perfect for young children just grasping their social and emotional development. My children love that they can sometimes predict what will happen next in the story and sometimes they dance on the end of their seat waiting to see what will happen on the next page. The illustrations by Jane Chapman bring the story to life and give us characters that we love to look at over and over again. My son describes it best... "I just want to love and snuggle Bear all day long".
This particular story was special to my youngest as he has not yet lost a tooth but is eagerly waiting. I thought the subject was handled beautifully since the wonder and fear quickly turned into "what can we do" and excitement.
If Jane Chapman and Karma Wilson continue to work together, I will continue to purchase these books. They just make you feel happy!
