Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for The Beautiful:

The Beautiful, which kicks off a new series, returns the vampire novel to popular form, evoking the style of Anne Rice and breathing fresh life into the genre.” —Entertainment Weekly

“It's true: Vampires are back, and they're more seductive than ever.” —Bustle

“Ahdieh brings New Orleans vibrantly to life, particularly when exploring the complicated racial and gender restrictions of high society through main and supporting characters of mixed-race origin. Sure to please fans of the author and of the vampire-romance genre.” —Kirkus

“The first in a series, this mystery novel shines when it focuses on Celine and her struggle to fit into society while trying to be true to herself.” —School Library Journal

“An action-packed third act and a final reveal will have readers grasping for the sequel. . . Vampires never stay dead for long, and best-selling Ahdieh's approach—part homage to the classics, part fresh-eyed revitalization—will intrigue all but the most committed skeptics.” —Booklist

Darkly glamorous . . . Compelling.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

“Ahdieh’s New Orleans is lushly atmospheric, permeating this series opener with an undercurrent of violence within a seductive underworld around Mardi Gras. . . Readers will champion Celine’s wit and incredible grit—even surrounded by powerful, supernatural protectors, Celine fights for herself and those she loves. . . Fans will clamor for the continuation to this captivating volume.” —Publishers Weekly

“An incredibly ornate, lush New Orleans; characters who imprint themselves on your memory forever; a story that is nail-biting and swoony and satisfying and tense ALL AT THE SAME TIME. And of course . . . VAMPIRES.” —Sabaa Tahir, New York Times bestselling author of An Ember in the Ashes

“It's intoxicating. The Beautiful has that decadent, slow-moving horror that feels like a dream slipping to nightmare. It's like walking alone down a twilight street and feeling the snap of a branch behind you and that acidic heart-in-your-throat rush of knowing that you're being followed. Stalked.” —Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Wolves

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2021
In order to write this review from a future perspective (Wooooo, time travel. No, in all honesty, I just forgot to review it at the time) I went back through the group chat on Bookstagram for this buddy read, and took note of the messages sent to use as references.

I really enjoyed this book! It rekindled my love for stories featuring vampires. I loved that was set in 19th century New Orleans. Those of you who regularly read my reviews will see a pattern here of high-rating historical fiction.

I loved the French phrases as they reminded me of French lessons at school (I had forgotten that I knew the odd French word. BRB whilst I go and add 'Speaks French,' to my CV lol). I didn't understand a word of the Spanish, but luckily it didn't matter as everything was naturally translated.

Odette was my favourite character by far. I do love a strong, dominant, female character, who is 'ahead of their time'.

I was out-on-a-limb in the group chat, as I was one of only a handful of us that actually enjoyed the book. However, even those of us who agreed to disagree on whether we liked it or not, all disliked the same things:
The chapters from the POV of the "bad guy," were cringe invoking! I feel they were not even required as, in hindsight, I'm not 100% sure who the character was at the end.
We also felt that we wanted more detail and world-building of New Orleans and the atmosphere. Mardi Gras occurred during the story, yet we only spent, like, half a page at the festival. I feel this was a missed opportunity.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2020
This was an enjoyable read. Celine was an interesting character and I liked her fire and determination. I was a little worried at times that she might turn into a swooning heroine but thankfully Celine proved herself more than capable of handling herself.
I loved the description of the Court although not much was made explicit so there is certainly more to learn in this regard.
My only real issue was, as others have mentioned, why the story was set in New Orleans. It felt strange because to me, I never really got a sense of the location. It felt very generic. And despite the fact that the author told us it was New Orleans, I found myself picturing something that looked more like 19th century London.
In regards to the plot, it was actually a great mystery. I really found myself wondering who the murderer was and who the overarching villain was going to be. I’m happy to say that I did not guess either correctly and the story really kept me on my toes. I love a thriller and this had real suspense throughout.
A solid start to the series and I will almost certainly read the next to see how the story unfolds.
