I like the premise of this movie. First and foremost, the artist in this movie is a horrible draftsman. Horrible. Hard to watch him "draw". He poses the model in innumerable contortions for what? That does not help him draw any better. He has trouble getting his pen to work, must be a metaphor, he scratches and smears and soaks his paper in cruddy water. His framing and composition is bland and dull. He sure can draw air though. There is one drawing where he seemingly focuses on the air around the model, scrawling to obscurity the nothingness of the air while avoiding the human form at all costs. What a terrible artist. Good premise for a movie, but could benefit from a better artist. Isay this because the actual drawing are a good majority of the shots, which isn't a bad thing, its just the artist is really bad.

Seriously? My wife and I, after swallowing the first hour like an unpeeled hard boiled egg started having fun with the stream--we would jump around the rest of the 3 hours and laugh everytime we landed on the exact same shot of this troubled artist. Someone should take the story, which is fantastic, and make a digestible version. DUDE and I'm totally into the artist thing, totally into slow paced films, but this one is ripping me apart, as a wise idiot once said. Anyway, watch it if you are a sucker for #1 rated movies, like this one is rated #1 most erotic film ever. Not. What a joke. Next please, and pass the popcorn.

2.0 out of 5 starsSo long

The movie was way too long but it was how it was done in the earlier days. The actress/model was beautiful to look at but the acting from many of the actors was not convincing-- too stage-like theatrical mode which I never like when I watch movies. Artistically speaking though, aesthetically, the beautiful picnic ornate table; the modeling/posing for the artist was wonderful to watch. But the plot could have been better.

5.0 out of 5 starsA lovely film, not for everyone.

This is a somewhat romantic movie about being an artist. It is long, and there is a lot of seemingly useless time taken on scenes (drawing and modeling), however I found it to be fascinating, informative for the relationships in the story, and useful to understand the characters and especially the artist and models relationship. The film simply wouldn't be as well cultivated without them. I am an artist, nothing like a master, however I was enchanted by the way this was filmed, acted, shot... everything. The internal struggles, the lapse of dialogue (aka informed silence), and subtle directing made for a gorgeous love story of which I enjoyed every minute.

2.0 out of 5 starsDisapointing

I expected a better video than this. It seemed to go on forever with very little interesting dialog or action. As I reflect on the video, I wonder why I let others' reviews sway my decision to purchase this film.

5.0 out of 5 starsThe Trailer conveys some complex topics

I didn’t watch this because I didn’t want to offend whoever her suitor was down the road. Seems like it would have been a really cool movie that could convey some complex topics. Still want to promote the brand and the actors and actresses. Not really sure if it is fair for me to review without watching.

5.0 out of 5 starsLa Belle Noiseuse Lite

This is the truncated version of LA BELLE NOISEUSE (English: The Annoying Beauty). I couldn't afford the much more expensive full-length 240 minute version. This is the divertimento cut which runs 130 minutes. Purists disdain this shorter version, but half a glass of Guinness is still a Guinness. The long artist at work scenes have been severely edited, changing the tone. The narrative remains mostly intact. Made for the Asian market, the dialogue is the original French with optional Chinese or English subtitles.

The plot is basically a cinematic take on the Heisenberg principle. The artist observes the model. The model observes the artist. The mutual observation changes both.

Film is loosely based on a short story by Balzac, "Maître Frenhofer" (1831).

Postscript in 2010:
I bought this dvd from a California importer in 2008 for $7, when the 240 minute version was $35. This edited version and the full-length original, [[ASIN:B0001Y4LEQ La Belle Noiseuse]], are now out of print and the prices much higher.

I suppose there is novelty in watching a lovely female fully undressed in a four hour video. She is living art. But once that wears off, the plot and quality of acting held my interest and felt that the duration of the film appropriate for the content. Interesting ending.
