Watching this was a little like swallowing vinegar

I'm an admirer of his work but knew virtually nothing about the man other than he was married to Diane Sawyer, of whom I have great admiration. Watching this was a little like swallowing vinegar. At one point Nichols says, "I've always played a prick rather well. I don't know why...." The interviewer replies, "Well,we won't go into that." His work has substance but he does come off as a bit of prick. I watched 2/3 of this and then left it.

Great story of Nichols life and achievements.

Great in depth coverage of Nicols early years in theatre and movies. Contains some great interviews with Nichols himself, later in life. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

After the proud prompt of Nichols playing a prick well, I knew I wasn't going to be able to swallow the rest of this film. Glad he had a stellar career, was lucky and worked with May. Never thought the Graduate was genius but it's the victors who got to weave the tales in that era. Lucky.

Fine documentary
I had no idea he had directed so many wonderful films and plays.

Worth saving.
Saw it on HBO. Surprisingly, had more to offer than Elaine May's homage; however, disappointed that it didn't run longer to offer a more inclusive retrospective. Still, I was delighted with the vintage Nichols & May sketches (in hi-res) and the disarming observations on his POV as a director.
