Druids Embrace Progressivism, Demonize Deplorables
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2018
Wow, where to start... Kevin Hearne is a gifted storyteller, and I passionately followed his Iron Druid series through the first eight books. For me, this is the first book that truly stumbles in the series. I was frequently distracted from the exciting storylines by interjections of leftist political perspectives. Unfortunately, these perspectives were not presented in a balanced manner, but rather in a snarky, cynical, condescending, and reductionistic way, with a tone that conveyed that those who did not agree probably belong in the "basket of deplorables." Incendiary topics include, but are not limited to the evils of: European colonialism, white male privilege, capitalism, racial and ethnic profiling as part of international travel, creationism, enhanced interrogation, and Emperialism. My frustration over the simplistic treatment of these topics resulted in my thoughts drifting out of the storyline, diminishing my enjoyment of the book. My hope is that this aspect of Beseiged is an anomaly for The Iron Druid series, and that Scourged avoids alienating loyal readers like me based on political ideology.
