I am so excited to see that Laurann Dohner is writing New Species books again. Best friends is a story about two women who are besties and who meet New Species males, fall in love and get mated. First up is Mel who moved to California from Indiana to get away from her overbearing, control freak mother. Mel works at a diner near Reservation and she is secretly in lust with a New Species male who comes in every once in awhile. Snow likes to go to the local diner and see the pretty waitress whom he has a secret crush on. It seems like these two will never get together as both are too shy but fate intervenes in the form of two gunmen who decide they are going to kill a few New Species and become famous. Mel sees them coming, manages to get to a shotgun and shoots them both before they can do any harm. One of them shoots her and before you can say “New Species are some hot, alpha males”, Snow has scooped her up and taken her to Reservation to be treated by Doc Alli. It turns out “‘tis but a flesh wound” but hilarity ensues when, under the influence of some killer pain meds, Mel reveals how attracted she is to Snow, her theory about cable TV, and how much she loves Snow’s beautiful butt. Once Snow realizes that Mel is really attracted to him, he relentlessly pursues her until she agrees to become his mate. Enter Mary, Mel’s bestie who also works as a waitress at the diner. Mary is Mel’s opposite in many ways. Mel is a tomboy/farm girl who can shoot vermin, muck stalls and milk a cow with one hand tied behind her back. Mel never met an animal she didn’t like. Mary? Not so much. Mary is a girlie city girl who has a deep fear of anything with claws, fangs or fur. Who can blame her? All animals seem to hate her and try to attack. She’s not even safe at the supermarket where she gets attacked by a cute little chihuahua and has to climb in her cart to get away. Mary is Mel’s bff, though, so she sucks it up and goes to Mel’s wedding to give away the bride. Mary becomes overwhelmed by all of the super scary claws and fangs around her so she retreats to the women’s restroom. She finally gets her courage up enough to go back to the reception when she hears two Species males and decides to hide in a janitor’s closet. The males keep searching and Mary has no cell signal to call for help so she has the brilliant idea to climb into a vent and crawl until she gets a signal. Things go wonky when the vent gives way and she falls into the basement lair of Lash, a wild zone New Species who looks more lion than man. Mary becomes terrified and can’t speak. Lash figures that’s consent and he proceeds to seduce Mary and declares that she is his mate. Mary decides that one great sexual encounter does not mean mating for life and the battle is on. One nosy “reporter” and two kidnapped parents later and a really raised bed where Lash proceeds to do what those alpha species guys do best (after all, he doesn’t have cable) and Mary is convinced that despite the scary fangs, claws, fur and all, Lash is the male for her. Thank you, thank you, thank you Laurann Dohner for writing this book. I am a New Species fanatic and this book was the best book I’ve read all year! I can’t wait for the next one. After all, with 15 New Species books to read and re-read and re-read again, who needs cable?

Woo hoo...another New Species book. Oh and it’s a two for one deal, which made me doubly giddy. And yes, giddy. I think I speak for all New Species fans when I say, we have been “patiently” waiting for this book *shakes head*. Almost broke my finger on the pre-order...just sayin.

Snow & Mel
The first book is our sweet Snow aka Mr. Blue Eyes, and his female, Melinda. Snow and other New Species have been coming into the diner that Melinda aka Mel works in for awhile. She has a huge crush on him and always gets a bit shy around him. The very first chapter, right at the beginning, some guys come in to harm the New Species, Mel being the badass she is, takes matters into her own hands and defends them. This starts out their hea journey. I also want to say that Mel is so funny, her little theory about men and cable had me laughing so hard.

This was a safe read. A little suspense, a badass female & a nice ass’d male. Great chemistry, great secondary characters, her bestie, Mary with her huge fear of animals, and our favorite New Species characters. The cafeteria scene with her and the New Species had me laughing so hard....along with her men and cable theory. Baby batter and an hea.

Lash & Mary
For all of us Valiant fans, we now have Lash to fawn over too. He definitely gives Valiant a run for his money in the top OTT New Species. This guy, such a handful in the best possible ways. Ok, so her bestie Mary, that is very, very afraid of animals. Yeah, she drops, and I mean literally drops into Lash’s domain. Did I mention that Lash is from the Wild Zone...yup, so hot and has the best theory of why Mary has problems with animals. So, she drops in, he seduces her and has his wicked way with her....oh and refuses to let them take her from him. Don’t get me wrong she wants to stay, but she’s not having his bossiness. These two cracked me up so much. At first she thinks he can’t talk, so she was not very happy to find out he can...and well. Honestly, I laughed so hard at this whole scene, it really was funny. Probably shouldn’t assume...know what I’m saying. They have a ton of chemistry, with all their back and forth. They literally can’t keep their hands off each other. He is the only New Species she is completely comfortable with, which is good, because he’s also one of the toughest. He helps her with her fear and she helps him with his manners...or lack of them.

This was a safe read with some suspense. Sensual, sexy and a ton of chemistry. A wild Tarzan style male and his prey female....lol...sorry, couldn’t resist that one. We get to see lots of our favorite New Species. Baby batter, an epilogue and an hea.

This is one of my all time favorite series ever. I have re-read it many times and love them all every time. I cannot wait until the next book. Psst...hopefully it will be a twofer too, made me so happy.

The NS books had such a good story premise from the beginning. The writing has always been a little bit simplistic, but the story potential always made up for it for me. Sadly, as the series has continued, it just feels as if there has been no development at all. The stories are now all the same: rather annoying & immature human woman succumbs to grunting animalistic man within 2 nanoseconds of him laying eyes on her. Their first time often contains questionable consent but that's always glossed over and since he's SO terribly good in bed it really doesn't matter because, despite her fear of him, she had a gazillion orgasms and then mates him within the month (even though all her friends tell her it's a catastrophic idea to tie yourself to someone you barely know who basically forced himself on you). Then they're preggo within the next week. Sigh.
I really hoped that we'd see NS moving on & growing up, but all that ever seems to happen is that bigoted human men attack the women they've mated, then they win them back and the bad men end up in prison. The quality of the writing hasn't improved either. Am I the only person driven potty by overuse of the word 'since'?
As for this particular book: there are inconsistencies in the book. In the 2nd story, early on the woman is referring to having a fear of being confined in small spaces. Later she explains to the hero that she 'doesn't have claustrophobia'.
All in all, I regret my purchase of this book. I did read the other negative reviews before buying and sadly I have to agree with them.
It kind of pains me to say this because I loved the NS concept - but after waiting an age for this latest installment I'm disappointed and think it unlikely I'll be buying any further titles by the author.

Really have no words. Can’t believe I actually bought this book hoping it would be better than the last one. Nope!
I promised myself I wouldn’t buy another of LD’s books, but I so enjoyed her earlier NS stories that I relented. Sorry, I’m done now. This offering is a rambling load of nothing.
The second story in this sounds a bit better, like it was written by someone else entirely.

I bought this with eager excitement as i loved the authors New Species series. The characters and situations they were in were richly described and felt plausible. This? Nope! Firstly the two female characters were weak, one dimensional irritants, their dialog felt like it was written by a two year old. The worst crime committed in the book was one of the females being terrified of animals.... just as the NS world was developing and earlier books portrays their humor and humanity, the author (whoever she is because I doubt she was the same one who wrote the previous NS books) threw in a character who was afraid of the NS because they're animals! The males were reduced to one dimensional Tarzan like creatures, grunting out nothing more eloquent as “mine”. Truly horrific! I wish i could scrub this latest offering from the NS series from my mind as i had, until now, thoroughly enjoyed them.

I have so been looking forward to the return of the species series. Having read all the books in the series, I was delighted when Mrs Dohner decided to bring out two more fabulous reads. The two short novellas placed in one action package was filled with excitement and humour. The two female protagonists were really amusing and their humorous banter pulled me in from the start. It was wonderful being re-acquainted with characters from previous books. It was like coming home to old friends. Each novella focuses on one of the two female protagonists and their relationship with the new species destined to be their mate. Both stories were wonderful. Loved Mel and Snow's relationship but I have to admit enjoying Mary and Lash's chemistry a little more, probably because of Mary's fear of anything furry and Lash's aggressive and yes, frightening stance and yet they just gelled. Lots of laughs. Please, please continue with this series Mrs Dohner! I was devastated when it stopped. So I was truly delighted when this two-novella book came out.
I am hoping that there will be a book for Jaded and especially Brass who has been in the series from the beginning (practically) so I would love him to have his happy ending!! This was a wonderful Christmas read for me. Thank you for the fabulous present.
