Each year, as the school year winds up, I end up buying and reading the short story compilations that come out. This year, I took a flyer on this new collection from the editor of Clarkesworld. And I'm really happy that I did.

Many of the other books are 'Science Fiction and Fantasy', and while I don't mind the fantasy stories of the others, I come for the science fiction. This one is entirely science fiction. As usual, there is some overlap between all of the collections. I was struck that all of the repeats int his one were the ones I would want to read again. The additional stories were also well selected.

This may be my go to staple for the future years.

There is a preponderance of post ecological collapse/apocalypse failure despite heroic attempts. I have to admit that although these many stories described what I expect to happen in the near future, I wish there had been more with less depressingly hopeless premises and outcomes. I very much appreciate hard, gritty, realistic prognosticational stories, but found myself tired of the relentless despair and longing for some fun, also. To be fair, there were some positive stories, and some useful thoughts about AI.

I enjoyed most of the stories in this book. One I couldn't finish - just not my style (that's why the 4 stars) - and a couple that were "just okay". I do feel it was worth the money, because in a collection of stories, you're going to have a couple that each person may not enjoy. But most everyone should enjoy the majority of the stories.

Like any anthology there are good and bad entries, but in this case I would not have chosen half the stories for a best science fiction collection. True there were some gems and I have noted those authors and will search for more of their work. With most of the authors that I didn't like, I had a common complaint. Yes the future is different and the language will also be different, but to adopt the futuristic language in today's work, is putting today's reader at a discomfort.

Authors like Michael Hicks embrace a different time and place, but he, and others like him, recognize that their readers are today's people and they write for their readers accordingly.

This is the best sf anthology I've read in years. I have a large collection of all the Nebula Awards, Year's Best Scinece Fiction, etc anthologies, but this beats them all. I get frustrated when fantasy stories are being passed as science fiction, but it does not happen in this book. Diverse variety of styles, all excellent!

I would say that more than half the stories in this collection are just fiction and fantasy, not science fiction, and definitely not hard. Many are padded out with tedious descriptions or relationships development because they lack a strong science fiction concept which unfolds as the story goes on. Many of the concepts are static and one-dimensional. I paid £11.39 and it simply wasn't worth that, £2.99 at best.
