make no mistake about it, this series IS literature. “The Betrayed”, by Lisa T. Bergren is volume 2 in the Gifted series and it is spectacular. Daria and her cohorts pick up their mission right where book 1, “The Begotten”, ended. The fight of good against evil, the search for completing the letter of St. Paul, trying to block the evil ascension to Pope by one of the Gifted’s enemies and fine tuning of their spiritual gifts are just some of the highlights in this installment.

Bergren continues to invest quality writing to expand the characters and enthrall readers with the non-stop action. With the setting being 14th century Italy, the Catholic Church and strong religious themes are natural participants. Woven in seamlessly are the scripture references and reminders that true faith and wisdom come from this source.

If you’re a fan of historical fiction, you’ll love this book and the series. Bergren’s portrayal of 14th century Italy is magnificent. She provides in depth travelogues for Sienna and Venice that have Mario Perillo’s ancestors cheering. The fantasy part is not so far removed that it requires folks like me to suspend our sensibilities 😉 The premise actually seems possible...🧐

I’ve read lots of books by this author and loved them all. This series was my 1st and I’m rereading it now, almost 10 years later. It might be even better this time around 📚

We as Christians are told" to be in this world but not of this world"....Satan is the ruler of this world and the fallen angels with him. He feeds on our weaknesses to bring us down to his level just like depicted in the character of Abramo. How fictional but how true to the ways of the world.

Their treasure hunt is exciting but how they deal with betrayal and challenges to their faith is inspiring. I didn't want the book to end! I look forward to being reunited with these characters in the next book.

It is the first in a 3 part series, so if you are thinking of buying it ... do yourself a favour and grab all 3 because at the end of the book you are just dying to know 'what happens next?'. They really do flow one into the other.
If you have read other books by this author and enjoyed them then you will enjoy this one as well, it follows perfectly in the footsteps of her fluid and dynamic style of character development, she sets the seen spectacularly without waffling and follows through on the tiny details that make all the difference in the end to good story.
If you have never read anything by this Author then by all means do yourself a favour and give this book a try ... if you are into romantic, colourful and deeply faith filled writing then this is sure to hit the spot!
