Better Things

 (302)7.8201618+
A single camera comedy in which Sam, a working actor with no filter who is trying to earn a living, navigate her daughters’ lives, have fun with a friend or two, and also, just maybe, squeeze in some private time once in a while. Her life is funny to watch, but you wouldn’t want to live it (except sometimes).

Pamela Adlon Finally Gets Her Own Show
Verified purchase
It's about time a network gave Pamela Adlon her own series. She is one of the most naturally funny comedians on television today. I have been a fan since she was on LUCKY LOUIE and continued to follow her on CALIFORNICATION and LOUIE. This collaboration with Louie C.K. is hilarious. I know a comedy series is a hit when I laugh out loud during the show and then later I laugh again remembering the scene. Pamela Adlon is wonderful because, particularly as a women over forty, I can relate to her and the situations she finds herself in from day to day.

I assume at least some of the material on the show comes from her real life as a divorced mom of three girls trying to make a living in the "dog eat dog" world of television in an age where beauty on the outside seems to trump beauty on the inside in the industry. I am a fan of Louie C.K. as well and I find that Pamela Adlon is the opposite of Louie in the way she refuses to submit herself to the kind of self deprecating humor that Louie is famous for. Instead she is confident and doesn't take crap from anyone.

I only hope this show is appreciated by all demographics and continues beyond the first season. It is original, funny and unabashedly honest.

Horrible

I made the mistake of buying the first season based on a trailer. How bad does this show suck? Let me count the ways.
1) It's not funny.
2) It tries too hard
3) The kids are unrelentingly annoying, but not in the way that real kids are annoying. They are annoying in a fake pretentious way.
4) The film maker seems obsessed with showing teenage girls in their underwear. No, real girls do not walk around in their underwear all the time. It's just another dumb annoying thing about this show.
Now, I'm going to see if I can get a refund for the rest of the season 1 episodes.

Refreshing and real

Finally, a single mom's life seen through the deliciously jaundiced eye of Pamela Adlon & Louie CK. If you enjoyed Louie's interactions with his daughters (which always sounded unscripted and almost painfully realistic to me) this show takes that to another level. Single mom "Sam" is relatable to those of us who don't have a parenting rule book, or a philosophy we studied in an overpriced workshop. She's real and flawed and sometimes completely clueless about being a parent and navigating the stickiness of life. That's what makes this show refreshing and unpredictable -- because THIS is how the rest of us (who will never sew a Halloween costume by hand) actually live. Bravo.

Dissapointed

I purchased season one because of the reviews and the fact that I loved Pam Adlon on Louie and Californication.
She is sexy in a very unique way and pretty funny also in her unique way.

But, I only was able to take three episodes, hoping it would get better. Her daughters are incredibly annoying and she depresses (The entire family) me instead of making me laugh.

To each its own, but sadly, this show was just not for me.

Love her, but not the milieu.

I love Pamela Adlon so it pains me to say this, but this show was off-putting to me. I have a hard time caring about rich L.A. people with servants. Perhaps because I don't have teenagers, I don't relate on that level, either, so that's 2 levels I don't relate on. I loved Life With Louie, so maybe I just have class issues with this show. Love to have her "problems."

Excellent premiere season, cant wait for even better things in Season 2

I really enjoy this new comedy about a single mom raising her 3 daughters - each one so different from the next, with a neighboring grandma, showing comical events that can occur since all have strong type A personalities except the youngest daughter. Pamela Adlon, who plays Sam Fox on the show, is a hilarious as a dry witted working mother who attempts to maintain happiness among the girls and her mother while trying to have somewhat of a social life of her own. There are touching, more serious moments, but mainly exceptionally funny. Louie CK co-created this show along with Adlon.

Surprise hit for me, I love Pamela Adlon

The best thing about this show is the writing and Pamela Adlon! She also played Marcy in Californication. I am married and do not have kids so it's not a likely topic for me, single mom with 3 girls, but it is played much deeper than the topic. It's about life and all family and friend relations. A glimpse into an ethical, funny, articulate caring family dramady I guess. Seriously, you should watch it.

I love this series

I love this series... It is a great cast coupled with storylines... a balance of reality (comedy, shock, depression, and joy).

HBO just launched a similar series called Divorce, but this blows that out of the water. I am a big fan of Better Things and hope to have it carry through for many more seasons.

Great job all around from writing, cast, and editing.
