Divorced, desperate, and destitute, former restaurateur Defiance Dayne finds out she has been bequeathed a house by a complete stranger. She is surprised, to say the least, and her curiosity gets the better of her. She leaves her beloved Phoenix and heads to one of the most infamous towns in America: Salem, Massachusetts.
She's only there to find out why a woman she's never met would leave her a house, a veritable castle that has seen better days. The lawyer assigned to the case practically begs her to take it off her hands, mostly because she's scared of it. The inanimate structure that, as far as Dephne can tell, has never hurt a fly.
Though it does come with some baggage. A pesky neighbor who wants her gone. A scruffy cat who's a bit of a jerk. And a handyman bathed in ink who could moonlight as a supermodel for GQ.
She decides to give it three days, and not because of the model. She feels at home in Salem. Safe. But even that comes to a screeching halt when people begin knocking on her door day and night, begging for her help to locate their lost objects.
Come to find out, they think she's a witch. And after a few mysterious mishaps, Dephne is beginning to wonder if they're right.

With only a few dollars in her pocket, she drove her old mint green Volkswagen Beetle (the only thing that was in her name alone) to Salem, Massachusetts where a woman has bequeathed her a house. Defiance doesn’t know anyone in Salem, let alone someone who would give her a house. Defiance was adopted by her Dads when she was only three years old. But she had nothing to lose, really nothing to lose, and she decides to see what this is all about, and once again has her whole life is turned upside down.
It turns out that Ruthie Goode was her maternal grandmother who knew where Defiance was all these years, so why did she let Defiance be adopted by strangers rather than take her in herself and what happened to her mother? Having a long-lost grandmother is just the tip of the iceberg. Defiance’s new world will include untapped magic, a gorgeous live-in handyman, a possessed house, an ornery cat and a whole town who have been awaiting her arrival.
Looks like Defiance’s luck has taken a turn for the better…or has it?
I love sooo many things about this new series, it’s like a new drug and I want more, more, more. Let me tell you some of what I love.
I love Defiance and her BFF, Annette, who followed her to town. And yes, I like the idea of the older heroine.
Roane, the hot handyman who lives in the basement, and has a backstory…holy sh**, I never saw that coming.
Percival, the house has a name and it also has a personality.
Grandma Ruthie…yes, she is dead but she was also a witch, so we get to know the grandma after the fact.
Hot older guys, including the Police Chief and former boyfriend of Ruthie, and Defiance’s Dads. All sweethearts.
And I love, love, love that we learn everything and get it all out on the table. We learn about Ruthie and Defiance’s magic and what the heck is up with Percy and Roane. Everything is out! There are no dribs and drabs of information that we have to wait for over books and books or magic that will suddenly, magically, appear out of no where. We know it all now!
Now that doesn’t mean there will be no stories to tell. Defiance has magic and she will be able to tap into it before the end of the story, but nowhere near the ability she was able to do as a child before it was suppressed to protect her from evil witches killing her to steal it, and I am certain will be a problem to deal with in future stories.
I was so engrossed in what was unfolding when this story ended and I can’t wait to see what will happen next.
The story is about a woman who has essentially hit rock bottom in life, when unexpectedly a grandmother she didn’t know passed away and leaves her with a house in Massachusetts and some big shoes to fill helping the locals. As Defiance learns about her past and the magic she holds she learns how to use it to help her new community but she has to be careful because there are those who seek to harm her and steal her magic, which is a rare and powerful magic.
I give this a 4 star review (3.5 if that was an option) because I had a few issues with reading it.
1. There are quite a few typos and grammatical type errors, I purchased the kindle version of this book back in February and have only just been able to sit down and read it, and while I liked the story enough the typos and grammatical errors started to get annoying after a bit. It’s been long enough since the release that an update to fix these simple mistakes could have been done yet it hasn’t, I’m hoping the next book is not like this.
2. The main character, Defiance, is a 44 year old woman. She has been to college and gotten a degree, been a successful Restauranteur, been married and divorced. She should come across as a mature woman who has had a rough time, unfortunately no matter how often her age is brought up, or how often I had to remind myself of her age, she read as a younger woman maybe in her early to mid 20s in my minds eye. Now there is nothing wrong with that age, the issue is trying to sell her as a 44 year old doesn’t work, she feels young and naive and a bit immature in how she behaves and faces life and those around her the majority of the time, there are a few instances where she acts with patience and maturity but it’s seldom and short lived.
3. Well the book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, which as I’ve said normally for me wouldn’t be an issue but throw it in with the above issues and I worry if buying the other books in this series will be worth it.
I do plan to buy the second book, I might recommend this if you need an easy fun palette cleanser between heavier more emotional reads, I’d recommend it more if the typos and such would get fixed.

The mysterious benefactor is recently deceased Ruthie Goode.
This is an incredibly fun read, with sparky characters, a vastly sexy kilted guy called Roane, a town of odd balls, and the cutest, anti social cat - ever.
There’s are plenty of humorous moments, lots of writing and art ‘in jokes’.
A little joke at the truth of independent writers and artists everywhere here, when Dephne, says “I made custom journals in my spare time, time being a commodity I seemed to have a lot of lately. Those journals made me a solid twelve bucks a month. Can’t shake a stick at that.”
Yes, the life of a writer, or artist, struggling to make a buck.
The book also boasts the best chapter headings, full of memes, dialogue, jokes, sayings; you name it.
I adore this book and can’t wait for the next instalment.

Now you need to know that I’m in my late 40s and I don't have the patience for YA novels anymore. Their characters full of angst, relationship naivety, a MC’s inability to see the bigger picture, "read between the lines" or know that the world isn’t just black & white/good or evil but a myriad shades of complex grey and all the secrets kept "for their own good" or to "keep you safe" thing. Defiance was a very frustrating character for me. Each decade we live, we gain knowledge, experience and life skills that effect our thoughts, actions and general world view. Defiance felt like a twentysomthing instead of a woman in her 40s. In fact, I found all of the main core characters in this story behaved in ways that remind me of YA or New Adult reads. This frustrated me as I was expecting something different from a PWF book.
Although I realised that this book wasn’t going to live up to all my expectations after the first couple of chapters, I did generally enjoy the story. I tried to let it just wash over me as I was reading and simply enjoy the ride. There weren't really any surprises and the plot followed the expected course but it was entertaining. Be warned, there is a huge revelation cliffhanger at the end (something else I disapprove of about the writing style) that did catch me unawares. Sadly however, I didn’t really engage enough with Defiance, Annette, Ruthie or Roane to want to read the next book.

The plot is not well thought through and there are more plot holes than actual plot. The idea of the story seems to be generally similar to the one in "American witch" (sorry can't remember the author's name but a very good read).
The characters are chaotic and all over the place - and I don't mean that they're intended to be that way, there's just absolutely no consistency to them. The dialogue is stilted and just a lot of white noise, instead of being a very valuable tool to reveal the character's, well, character. Quite a lot of the scenes seem to be there just because they sound cool, rather than because they contribute to the storyline, and most of the dialogue has similar issues.
The foreshadowing is absolutely abysmal - no subtlety whatsoever, no little clues here or there mentioned in passing.
The editors seem to have dropped the ball a few times as well - dialogue was repeated almost word for word, words were used incorrectly etc.
It really has the feel of a rushed, cobbled together bland story, that is certainly not written by a grown-up.
At this point, the only reason I would read the next installment, would be morbid fascination of how bad it can go.
