Editorial Reviews

Review

A 2020 Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist: Best Picture Books

“Readers will agree: All differences should be hugged, er, embraced.” Kirkus Reviews

“The lesson is a simple, familiar one―selflessness and sympathy are key to making friends―but Adamson’s gentle humor and his eager-eyed characters’ yearning become an eloquent testimony to the power of a little TLC.” Publishers Weekly

“Adamson’s warm and expressive watercolor and pencil illustrations show Bernard wrapped around a ticklish crocodile, snuggled up beside a blissed-out bunny, and patiently listening to a bat’s troubles during an evening therapy session. This small bird discovers he can reach new heights by leaning on his peers…Told with humor and heart, this sweet friendship tale soars.” School Library Journal

“[A] humorous story with an important takeaway: our differences can be the very thing that make us dear to others, and embracing those differences can lead to the best things in life.” Booklist

“Adamson’s watercolor and pencil art moves from vibrant full spreads to vignette-styled pages, lending both movement and focus, and wide-eyed, lavender-hued Bernard cuts an appealingly quirky figure with his wiggly wings…a celebration of cuddles and snuggles.” The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book with a lovely message: It’s OK to be different.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2020
This is a charming book with a cute hero and a heart-warming message that even very young children will understand.

Bernard the bird is born with super-long wings that prevent him from flying alongside all his other bird friends. This makes him feel left out and sorry for himself. Then one day, he meets a very sad orangutan, and to Bernard’s delight, his extra long wings allow him to reach right around the orangutan and give him a big hug to cheer him up. Soon, all the other animals are coming to Bernard for cuddles, and in no time at all he has lots of new friends and every day is full of fun. So, you see, being different can also make you special!

As well as a sweet story with an important moral, this book is beautifully illustrated, with different-sized fonts and lots of fun details to catch the eye.

As an experiment, I bought the Kindle version to see how my two grandsons would react to it. I tried reading it with them on my IPad, which they usually love to play on, but their answer was a big, fat NO! An iPad is not a book, and they love their books; love being able to hold them and turn the pages. So, lesson learnt: no more ebooks for them. But I will order the printed version; it’ll be a great addition to their little library.

Thanks for reading my review. I hope you found it helpful.
