Please note that despite the claim on the movie, this is NOT the 1994 version with Sean Bean and Alan Cumming. I thought that's what we were going to be watching and I was sadly disappointed. The description of the movie as given is accurate however, but it bears no relation whatsoever to either the 1994 Sean Bean movie or the book. It was odd, confusing, and disappointing to myself and my 6 year old who just finished reading the book together and were expecting something remotely similar to the events of the book.

This is Black Beauty (1971) with Mark Lester as Joe Evans. The 1994 version is narrated by the horse; everything in the Xray is correct for the 1994 version, the film is the part that doesn't match.

This one is different. It goes very deep into the psyche regarding the nature of Man as told through the horses in this movie. Watching this movie reminds me of watching documentaries about the Holocaust; something very much worth watching and learning from, but not the kind of thing I need to see ever again. The lesson was logged in, and in a very painful - but real - way. It also made me think of what it really must have been like to be a slave under control of other humans. I recommend this movie as a study of mankind, and his relationship with animals, and how man's ways has influenced their relationships with other humans over the centuries as well, and hopefully the viewer will take away some valuable insights that could impact the rest of their lives. This movie is very well done, painful to watch, but has the possibility to leave you thinking about it's depth of meaning for days. I watched it, I appreciated the quality of the production, I was profoundly impacted, but I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

Not for the usual reasons. I watches this with my nieces and nephews, looking forward to the experience because I loved this movie when I was young. I got a surprise.

This movie has many beautiful scenes; there's no coarse language, sexually explicit scenes or even innuendos. There are, however, many sad and scary scenes for small children. I happened to be watching with a 13 and 5 year old. The 5 year old was scared during some of the scarier scenes, such as when Black Beauty was caught in a fire and when Ginger died from mal-treatment. She was very upset when the horses were abused.

I found myself explaining a lot of things to her, reminding her that it's very important that we treat animals nice, etc., trying to alleviate some of the feelings she was having.

The 13 year old was fine although he did get very upset when Black Beauty was abused by many of his owners.

It's funny...I didn't remember these scenes from my childhood viewing...I remember the horses running in the field, playing with one another, playing with the owner's children and the stable handlers.

I'm glad I bought it and I'm glad I watched it with the kids.

This is an outstanding movie. I bought it for my 3 yr. old grand daughter. Though it took over a month to finally arrive, the DVD was in excellent condition. My granddaughter loves the story. It shows how some people treat animals kindly, while others could care less how they treat and care for animals. She loved Ginger, and Merry Legs, as well as Black Beauty. She watched the DVD ALL DAY!!!. it is a timeless story and great for all ages. I highly recommend this movie, as my granddaughter has never grown tired of it. I had checked it out from my local library, over the summer, I must've checked it out at least 6 additional times. I decided to purchase her, her own copy. Please get this movie, you won't be sorry.

This movie is more about what the horse endures than the little boy that lost him due to hard times. It’s about the dream they would be United again. Life drags on for Beauty: being passed around and beaten up by life until it’s broken heat wants to die.

Eventually they find each other, and the emotion of being rescued by Love, makes your heart ache.

I KNEW THAT THERE WERE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THIS MOVIE. I HAD SEEN THE 1971 VERSION AND LOVED IT. MOST PEOPLE WHO KNOW THE STORY PREFER THIS VERSION AS IT IS THE ORIGINAL. HOWEVER, I AM NOT A CHILD. I THINK THAT THE '71 VERSION IS MORE ENJOYABLE FOR ADULTS. THE HORSE IS NOT TELLING THE STORY AS IN THE ORIGINAL. THE STORY IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT, TOO.

I watched the movie with my 6 year old grand daughter. She just loved the movie, and it kept her attention all the way through. Here's what she had to say about the movie: "I liked the movie and I give it 5 stars. Black Beauty tried to get back his nice owner, and then he went through so much with other new owners; some nice and some mean. Then in the end he found the boy who was his friend from a long time ago, and he was grown up. Then he went to live with him and Black Beauty was very happy."
