“[A]nother instant classic.” —The Real Book Spy
“The undisputed master of blending geopolitics with spycraft…a thriller aficionado’s dream.” —The Providence Journal
The new Cold War is about to go hot.
#1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestselling author Brad Thor is back with his most intense thriller yet.
Scot Harvath is having his best summer ever. With a cottage on the fjord, a boat, and his beautiful girlfriend Sølvi, he’s got everything he could possibly want. But out of vacation days and long overdue back home, America’s top spy has a decision to make—return, or submit his resignation.
When his deadly past comes calling, though, he’ll be left with no choice at all.
Leaving his favorite Oslo café, Harvath watches as a ghost climbs out of a taxi—a man he killed years ago, halfway around the world. How is he still alive? And what is he doing in Norway?
In a race against time that will take him high above the Arctic Circle, Harvath is tested in ways he has never imagined and pushed to a limit few human beings could ever endure.
If he succeeds, he’ll walk away with everything. If he fails, the United States and its allies will be at the mercy of one of the world’s most dangerous actors.

The book opens with a part near the ending then immediately jumps backward to 72 hours previously where it began similar to lots of action movies. There is minimal character growth or appearance of the team that surrounds and supports Scott from the Carlson group. They are used more as filler to push the story forward to the next stage of progress with little or no care by the reader. The Communist Chinese agitators are never really that much of a threat, nor are the scenarios in which they are written very thrilling. There is no sense of impending possible disaster or unknown threat to Scott or other characters. Not a lot of detail about the Communist Chinese technology of Black Ice is really portrayed in the story, nor is it used in a life threatening scenario to any of the characters.
The only redeeming part of the entire book was the introduction of a man and former fellow spy to Reed Carlton who plays a pivotal and important role in the story. He gives the backstory on Reed Carlton's nickname of Peaches telling Scott the story. It would have been more effetive for it to have been told in a flashback manner where it is written in detail as if it were happening at the moment. This would have given the readers greater appreciation of and understanding of the character Reed Carlton.
If you TRULY want the BEST of the Scott Harvath story and Brad Thor's work, then start with The Lions of Lucerne and his earlier novels in the series. They are far more Thrilling, edge of your seat reading that has been missing for several books now.
Brad Thor doesn't disappoint in this new installment in the series. Black Ice has a engaging plot that moves right along and seems ripped from the front pages - or rather future front pages - of the news. The level of research that goes into the books is insane. My husband is retired Navy and also loves the books for their level of realism when it comes to weaponry, tactics and details planning and carrying out ops.
What I love about Brad Thor's books is that they appeal equally to me and to my husband. There's just enough ...dare I say romance??? ... with Harvath's female love interests and details about the scenery and food and the like as there is the hardcore "guy" stuff. The explosions and action and all that stuff.
My advice if you haven't read any of Brad Thor's books is to go back and read them in order because there is plot and character development that carries through from book to book - but if you're not up to that level of commitment, then Black Ice is still a wonderful stand alone thriller. I'm about halfway through and always anxious for next summer's book! Job well done (again), Mr. Thor!

The main problem I had with this book is that I know I’ll have to wait a year for more new material.

Vielen Dank.
