Yet another wait for the next book. I was so enthralled at the new adventure of Rose and the Black Elves, and it had to end at an important time for her. Why does it have to end at a trilogy? Would so love to see another set of books on Elfhame and the adventures in Raine.

Ok so, the series does progress a lot more in the second book. We finally get some action going on. I’m sorry but I still can’t stand Rose. I love Neeve, Kian, and Thorne enough to remain invested in the storyline. But Rose is truly a thorn in my side. Her incessant whining and petulant attitude is tiresome. If you’ve heard the sound bite “Am I the drama?” Rose definitely is! She’s pretty dense about everything going on in her life because of her obsession with Thorne. I mean seriously, she basically accosted him while he was unconscious. Not cool especially since she crushes on any guy that so much as looked her way.

Overall the story is good and flows well. I liked it much better than the first book. The world building is great and I’m glad to have experienced the journey into Elfham. I look forward to the next book.

For greatest enjoyment and understanding, Book 1 (Heart of the Forest) and Book 2 (White as Frost) should be read first, then Book 3, and finally, Book 4 (Red as Flame) when it is published. The complete series should be binge-read to keep the characters, worlds, and relationships straight, and to understand the characters' motivations. It's been several months since I read White as Frost and it took a while to catch up with the story. The relationship tension among Rose, Neeve, Thorne, and Kian becomes even more strained as other suitors would like to make an alliance with the King of Raine, who is considering where his daughters should be used for maximum political effect, possibly with the Nightshade Lord. Rose and Neeve suffer strained relations that oscillate among anger, jealousy, affection, and misunderstandings. The best-laid plans of all the parties are disrupted by Fate. There are numerous unexpected plot twists to keep the suspense and interest high.
The writing is very poetically descriptive of the wonders of both the earthly realm and Elfhame, the Dark Elf realm, with many colorful or evocative similes and metaphors. The descriptions of food made me hungry. For these reasons, the reading pace should be slow enough to fully appreciate the imagery so skilfully crafted.

I was so excited to get this book after having listened to the first book. I came to love the characters and couldn't wait to find out what happened next. The characters have grown up but are still the same ones I loved from the first book. The author did a great job with the story and kept me wanting more. The narrator did a wonderful job with the voices and giving each character their own.

I loved that Rose is the heroine. She isn't perfect and has her own issues but she will do anything for those she loves. Neeve and her relationship may have been rocky but they care so deeply for each other. I just can't get over how much I love this world and these characters and how badly I want book 3 now! Love these books.
