A very enjoyable anthology

I got this anthology because I love all things Anne Bishop and she has a story in here. I found it a mixed bag, but on the whole I enjoyed most of the stories. This anthology is a retelling of classic and old fairy tales, some by well-known authors like Jane Yolen and Joyce Carol Oates and others I didn't know.
Anne Bishop's Rapunzel retelling is a favorite, told in multiple POVs. I also liked Michael Cadman's The Flounder's Kiss, On Lickerish Hill by Susanna Clarke, True Thomas by Bruce Glassco, and Godmother Death by Jane Yolen.
Many of these stories are dark though, in truth, most fairy tales are also dark and full of monsters, murder, and mayhem. I'm sure other readers would like ones that I didn't care for; there's really something for everyone here to enjoy.

I can always depend on Datlow & Windling to compile the most excellent anthologies. I particularly enjoyed this collection; it included original retellings of fairy tales that I grew up reading as well as some less common tales that I didn't. These stories have been crafted for mature audiences & some include sexual descriptions or violent scenes that haven't been tempered for the kids (as later, softened versions of the Grimm's stories have been). This is one of my favorite Datlow/Dwindling anthologies!

This is a well-curated anthology of short stories. The stories in here are all well-written and well-chosen, and they're a delight to read. I've always been a fan of 'adult' retellings of fairy tales, and this provides a lot of great quality ones. Most are short enough to read in short bursts.

The kindle formatting can be a little difficult sometimes; when the story shifts from one character's perspective to another, there's no line breaks to denote a change, so sometimes it can be a little hard to follow immediately. This is purely a formatting issue, though, and doesn't detract from the quality of the stories themselves.

I receieved this book from the seller, in timely fashion and it was well worth the wait. The book was beyond anyone's expectations. I had thought that this book would be boring. Who would have thought to write a story of what happened to Rumpelstiltskin after he was offically defeated by the mom? I've always wondered if anyone had made any strange but oddly fascinating twists to stories that we've heard in our childhood.
Lo and behold - we have a book full of stories such as that! I would strongly recommend anyone who has a twisted but adult version of how stories actually would've been with choldhood stories.
Like I said, athe seller mailed this book out on time, and was true to word when the book was actually used. Some yellowing but that is to be expected of an old, used book but still readable!
I would recommend the book, AND the seller!
