Assembly was simple...the griddle weighs a LOT. In fact I needed help putting in place and I'm a big guy. This weekend was coined the "Great Griddle Weekend!" by a group of my friends. It began Friday night with a friend of mine who's a chef doing teppanyaki for a large group of us. It was absolutely amazing! Sat am we cooked a dozen scrambled eggs, 5 lbs' of bacon, hash browns and several dozen pancakes. Time from start to finish...around 30 min. Cleanup a breeze! I'll spare you the rest of the weekends menu, but everything we put on the griddle came out absolute amazing! We went thru a whole tank of LP by the end of Sunday night. Obviously I'm incredibly impressed with the quality and the price of this griddle! I just bought a $3000 high-end NG grill and I have to say, I've opted for this griddle over the grill most nights.
Be sure to invest in the cover AND USE IT! With cleaning and oiling after EACH USE I'm convinced this griddle will last for years. Heck, if it doesn't for some reason I can buy 10 more of them with the money I would have spent on the high-end griddle I was ready to purchase before buying this griddle.
I did not get the newer top with the rear grease managment system. The front system IS a issue, I already have
a grease spot on patio. Its amazing that Blackstone hasn't addressed this yet. There are so many
easy solutions to change that during manufacturing. I also contacted Blackstone about this.. response
"Amazon has mixed inventory of both front and rear grease griddles, they also ship for themselves so we have no control over which griddle you receive. The only way to ensure 99% that you will get the rear grease top is to place your order through us direct. Sorry for the inconvenience."
I ordered the stainless steel model for myself. The one Amazon sent arrived quickly and without damage despite being a rediculously heavy box. Amazon delivery put it next to my garage instead of my front door - clearly the driver was thinking and not on auto-pilot. A very appreciated service.
Four of the pictures on Amazon showed the new model (rear grease trap) and two show the older model (front grease channel) but the description said you get the older model, "Easily manage excess grease with the front grease management system." I would have pruchased it regardless BUT, I am very happy I got the newer one. The rear grease management system is a big improvement. Kudo's to Blackstone for listening to customer complaints and revising the product. There is a small lip in the front that keeps grease from dripping off the front and keeps food on the griddle and not on the floor, and the rear drain is designed better and drips into the drip pan as it should and there will be less food sacrificed to the griddle gods.
After 10 years, my Webber grill frame is disintegrating before my eyes - the black powder coated griddle is very similar in construction to my Webber and I would expect the frame to last about 10 years if kept outside. I expect the stainless steel version to out last me. I expect the burners to last about 10 years. I had to replace my Webber burners at 9 years and it was pretty easy but these Blackstone burners are a simpler design and I believe replacing them will be even easier.
I used vegetable oil to season the older work griddle and I am pretty happy with the results, that said, I used Flax oil as recommended on the Blackstone Youtube video, and really took my time. It took between 2-3 hours and half a tank of LP - I probably did 6 thin coats at 20 minute intervals and the results were nothing short of impressive. The color is a very dark redish brown approaching black. It looks like the one the pro did on the Blackstone video - with pretty consistent coloring. As compared to the vegtable oil seasoning on the older griddle, the older one came out darker black and the color variation is not as consistent. If you can get Flax oil, I think it is worth it but I wouldn't be upset if all I could get was vegtable oil.
The stainless steel looks GREAT! If it looked any better it would need to be framed and put in a museum. It was very easy to put together, I didn't even need the instruction manual to put it together. The four burner zones are great! The Piezo igniter works well (for now - I've never had one last a long time regardless of manufacturer). The lower shelf is very useful. If you get a hard cover, not only will the hard cover FAR outlast the canvas which makes it worth the extra money, it doubles as a wind shield. With the hard cover hanging from the rear lip, a significant amount of heat can be retained under the griddle which would be very useful for keeping food warm on the shelf underneath the griddle - almost like a heat lamp in a restaurant.
During the seasoning process, I got a little oil on the stainless steel frame and over several hours it cooked on pretty well. I tried everything to get it off and failed until I resorted to Bar Keeper's Friend. It still took some elbow grease but I was able to get it all off.
Bottom line is if you can afford the extra $100, I think the stainless is worth the money. Undoubtedly, you will get significantly more life out of the product, but even if you get the cheaper model and even if you get the older model, you will still have a great product.
Blackstone makes a replacement side shelf that has a built in cutting board, trash bag holder and paper towel holder. Pretty cool but not worth the $45 dollars to me and it looks like it only comes in black.
