Blog postI had a Coke yesterday. Maybe not exotic to some of you, but I made a conscious decision in July of 2013 to stop drinking soda pop. Too much corn syrup in my life. Too many chemicals. Not healthy.
Summer 2013 was kinda one of those big ones. At least for me. Major emotional breakdown. In a good way, because I realized that I wasn’t happy. Hadn’t been happy in a while. Needed to make changes. Drastic ones.
Had been single for a while at that point. Wheels spinning in place. Gea1 week ago Read more -
Blog postI lost a good friend yesterday.
Back in 2018 (I think), Fabulous Publisher Babe and I took the Coast Starlight (Amtrak) to Los Angeles from Seattle. Overnight, so we got a cabin and hung out there, plugged in and writing while enjoying the scenery and talking publishing. (Duh)
Outside of Oakland, we hopped off, because the main train continues down the coast and stops at every little town. We took an inland spur that only stopped a few times, and got us to Bakersfield, where e2 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postFellow told me that the other day. Part of a discussion on the interwebs about the different lifestyles that come with Indie Publishing.
First off, if anyone tells you that “you MUST” do X, feel free to ignore them. I’ll offer suggestions and hints, but I haven’t found the secret handshake that made me wealthy beyond all dreams of avarice.
Not that I would mind.
I can tell you what works for me. I can look at what worked for other folks.

Blog postI bought property at the end of a cul-de-sac. In a quiet corner of rural King County (Seattle), with only two access points (NW and SW) for an area roughly 100 square miles. (The county bought the land around Rattlesnake Canyon and closed it off years ago, so you can’t get through that way anymore. EVER.)
To get to my house, you drive down the road, turn a curve, go to the end, and you’re facing my gravel driveway. Then you wind up and around 150 meters to a plateau midway up the hill1 month ago Read more -
Blog postA long time ago, I came to the realization that things in life were either going to go uphill or downhill. You were either conquering mountains or settling for living a perfectly flat and boringly dreary life until death finally remembered to come for you.
Nope.
When I met the Fabulous Publisher Babe, she introduced me to the Anti-Stodgy Campaign, where she tries to do one completely new thing every month. Doesn’t have to be earth-shattering. Just new and different. Take a new1 month ago Read more -
Blog postI got to fanboy yesterday. Phil Kosnett (the now-former Ambassador) and his lovely wife Alison have been on a west coast swing, visiting their daughter in LA and then their son in Portland, OR. And they were gracious enough to carve out time for me and Fabulous Publisher Babe to have dinner with them last night.

Blog postI’ve talked elsewhere about Fabulous Publisher Babe™’s Anti-Stodgy campaign. It arises from research showing that between about ages 14 and 24, your tastes tend to lock down. Same food. Same music. Same clothing. Same routine. Humans are creatures of pattern, so they get into something and stay. That’s how mid-life crises come about, when someone […]

Blog postOne of the things they don’t tell you about being a grown-up is that you’ll lose friends along the way. Partly, at least in my case, that’s the outcome of living a full and adventurous life.
I wanted to talk recent times, but it dawns on me that I need to go way back to set up the scene. because I’ve lived a strange life so far.

Blog postWriters, you are a brand. You get that, right? When a reader sees your name on a cover, they will hopefully have a good idea what sort of story to expect. We’re beyond good art, good font, and good blurb here. Your name.
Your brand.
So what are you selling them?
This came up for me recently because I’m generally known for space opera kinds of actiony science fiction. At the same time, I write other stuff. Most of it falls into SF, but I also have the occasional sword a3 months ago Read more -
Blog postHad a few conversations recently that got me to thinking about impostor syndrome and how many folks that want to commit art end up holding back.
I know a lot of creatives that can commit all manner of art. Could make money at it. Dunno about a living, because that involves a lot of work, but I started out making $258 my first year selling books.
From there, I decided that I wanted to art for money. As I spoke with various artists, I came to realize how many of them don’t belie4 months ago Read more
