About the author

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.
They have co-authored four NYT and USAT bestselling series, the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles, which they post as a free weekly serial. For complete list of their books, fun extras, and Innkeeper installments, please visit their website at Ilona-andrews.com.

I have to say I liked the plot point in this book a lot. The whole concept of someone spreading magical disease, it was a great start to the book. I still really like the investigative work that goes along with Kate working in the Order.
Of course, probably my favorite thing about this book is Kate and Curran. Man is there a lot of back and forth between the two of them. There is miscommunication, drama, hissy fits, and of course burning up the pages. They have such a great dynamic not just in their personal lives, but also the way they work together for the common good.
I have to say there were some moments in this book that really tugged on my heart strings. The last thing Erra says to Kate is probably going to sit with her for a while, and it’s hard to think about. But really the thing that was the hardest, especially for Curran, was what happens when the people you put your trust in, who you fight for, don’t extend you even the closest bit of that back. It was rough, it’s still a little rough, and I think that is going to follow everyone along as the books move forward.
Before we get into my thoughts and feelings about this particular installment, here are a few things that are true about all of them and that you can read without any fear of spoilers :)
#1 this series is absolutely phenomenal and you all need to read it if you haven’t yet :) I blew through all of the stories in it in record time, cause I was unable to put them down and read something else :)
#2 the whole series follow Kate, the main character, and tells one big story… so even though each installment revolves around a smaller event / issue, I highly encourage you to read them all in order, including the novellas and side books that happen along the way, because they all bring something extra to your overall experience :) the reading order of all those stories can be easily found on Goodreads if you look for the series Kate Daniels :) I read them all in that order, as it was recommended to me by my good friend who already finished it, and I am very happy I did that :) of course I can’t force you to listen to me, I’m no #BookPolice ;) it’s just a friendly suggestion ;)
#3 a few more words about the series in general :) it’s a paranormal / urban fantasy story, set in an alternate version of our world… in it, there are magic waves that crash over the world, making basically all technology useless for some time… because it’s impossible to predict when exactly they will come and go, it alters the way people live… of course, with magic came all sort of gifts and talents… not to mention magical creatures :) we definitely have vampires and necromancers of some sort who control them, shapeshifters who can change into all sorts of animals, not to mention the fact that we get to see magical influences and practitioners from very different belief systems… it’s a lot to explain and we don’t have that much time to get into all the details right now :) just know it’s phenomenal :) each book is action packed, fast paced and full of surprising twists and turns… I can’t even begin to count the number of times when I gasped in shock because the plot went in a completely different way than I anticipated :) once you get to know this world and these characters, you will be completely hooked… and speaking of characters… ;)
#4 diverse and interesting characters are one of the main reasons why I love this series so much :) not only the main one, Kate, goes through a pretty spectacular character development arch throughout the whole series, but along the way we keep meeting new ones… and before you know what happened, you have a whole bunch of people you love and with each book you are quietly chanting “don’t kill any of them, don’t kill any of them” as if that might change some outcomes :) obviously I won’t name anyone right here, because a lot of them might come as a surprise to you… what I will say is that it will be a pleasure to re-read those books again soon, knowing how certain characters end up… that’s all I’m gonna say ;)
#5 DO NOT READ THE REST OF THIS REVIEW if you are not caught up on the previous stories… I will be mentioning people and events from previous books next, because I cannot possibly write more about my feelings without them, and you will be spoiled about some major surprising turns… I won’t spoil anything when it comes to the book I am currently reviewing, but everything that happened before is fair game :) you’ve been warned ;)
surprise, surprise, this was yet another phenomenally entertaining installment in this series… more importantly, this is finally the book where the oh so slow romance between Kate and Curran reaches a final decision :) as in will they or won’t they be together… ;) and come on, we all know the answer to that one already ;) when it comes to the mystery in this novel, it’s a really good one as well… because what starts as a random call to end a fight in a bar, evolves into a much more serious situation, with some dangerous plagues threatening everyone and a threat that will hit very close to home for Kate… dun dun duuuunnn :) be prepared to try not to fall from the edge of the seat this book will put you in, because especially towards the end you will be reading a bit faster and faster, because you will have to know how it all ends… for a moment I was seriously afraid that it will end on a cliffhanger, but fortunately that’s not the case :) I can’t say more because of my no spoilers rule, but it’s pretty spectacular :)
Full Review:
I have enjoyed the first three installments in this series. I have enjoyed them so much I've been able to swat away any complaints I had about them. This is the first novel I don't have complaints to swat away. This fourth book is my favorite so far and we finally unravel a lot of the mystery surrounding both Kate and Curren's pasts. There are many more battles to come and more darkness to uncover in Atlanta. However, Kate as a character, finally feels completely fleshed out and fully developed.
As is the trend so far, one I am not complaining about, this book is an emotional roller coaster. I was right there with Kate when she was angry, upset, sad and happy. The authors just pull these emotions out of me and I can't help but feel the same things Kate does as she confronts the supernatural head on. This book is full of explosions both on the battlefield and in the political arena. There will be a lot of repercussions moving forward.
So many amazing things happen in this installment. All i have to say is finally! Finally! So many pieces fall into place in this book and I could not be more pleased. I am a little afraid to start the next book since things are going so well right now, I know they are going to fall apart in half a minute. That can't stop me though. I am on a serious roll with this series!

From the first moment that I read about Curran, I fell in love with his character and he really makes me smile at his stubbornness, his tenacity and how he is as an Alpha, strong but fair and I love how we get to know him even more and given a bit more insight on things that happened in the past making you realise why he acts the way he does and why he reacts to certain situations the way that he does, you really begin to understand him. I love Kate..... I have a bit of an obsession for reading about strong capable women who love their independence, will fight to keep it and who can and will protect herself and others without having a man run to the rescue. She doesn't want a knight in shining armour.... She wants to fight alongside him and be completely equal. These two really are perfect for each other and I love reading about them!!!
This storyline was so exciting and unbelievably addictive, it is a thrilling journey that keeps you hooked at every turn. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!!! This author is a definite favourite of mine and I really recommend that everyone reads her books!!!!

That can't be said about the husband-and-wife duo behind the Ilona Andrews name. The books might not deviate much from the traditions outlined above but the ones I've read so far in the series have some graphic action, excellent beasties and tight plotting. Magic Bleeds is no different with heroine Kate Daniels wielding a deadly magical blade while taking on everything thrown at her by the malevolent sister of the legendary first vampire. The heroine's secret is that she is the only living child of said ultimate bad guy but there won't be any happy families here - daddy would kill her to eliminate a potential rival if he knew of her existence and her aunt is just as ruthless once she discovers her secret. Cue a roller coaster plot which manages to include just enough romance between Kate and Curran, the Beast Lord Of Atlanta, to further their relationship without drowning the plot in saccharin. The authors create a believable near-future world where magic comes in unpredictable waves, disabling modern technology and destroying hi-tech buildings before disappearing. The various supernatural critters are satisfyingly alien and Other, even if some of them were once human. The Kate Daniels character is nicely drawn and the potentially deadly jealousy of the various were-tribes at this outsider's growing influence over Beast Lord Curran plays neatly into the plot. Cliched or not, it's good stuff.

So after the ending of Magic Strikes I couldn't wait to get started on Magic Bleeds and see Kate pay up on her bet with Curran where she promised to cook him dinner naked. It feels like I have been waiting FOREVER for them to finally give into their desire and become a couple so I had such high hopes for that night. Well you can imagine my disappointment when Curran fails to turn up - I think I was almost as broken hearted by the way things turned out as Kate was, especially when she calls the keep to make sure he is OK and gets a big brush off. As you'd expect from Kate she turns her pain into anger and she becomes absolutely determined to avoid all contact with Curran in the future, something that she knows isn't going to be easy when she is the Order's main point of contact for all things involving the Pack. It gets especially difficult to avoid him when a mysterious new arrival in town starts targeting shapeshifters, not only are they behind multiple deaths but they also seem determined to start a modern day plague in the middle of Atlanta. It doesn't take too long for Kate to figure out that one of Roland's most trusted warriors is in town, unfortunately this is one family reunion that she is never going to forget - that's if she even survives it.
Just when I think I can't love this series more Ilona Andrews pulls it out of the bag and delivers yet another 5 star read. Magic Strikes has everything I've loved about the previous books - the fantastic characters, edge of your seat action, truly evil enemies who aren't going to be easy to beat and to top it all off the absolutely wonderful banter between Kate and Curran. They may have a HUGE misunderstanding at the beginning of the book but oh boy do they make up for it further down the line and finally, FINALLY we get to see the moment we've all been waiting for!!!! I seriously don't think I'll ever get enough of this couple or their friends so I just hope the authors start writing faster - I need at least a book a month from them to keep me happy!
The stakes are higher than ever and Kate is facing her greatest battle yet. It honestly makes me worry about what will happen when she eventually has to face Roland, I really don't know how she will be able to survive it. She isn't the type to give in easily though and she kicks arse in this book just as well as (if not better than) she ever has before. As much as Curran steals the show every time he steps onto the page I also adore the secondary characters in this series, Angela is just brilliant and she gives Kate the kick up the butt that she needs when it comes to giving Curran a chance to explain himself. I have to give a special mention to Kate's new attack poodle too, he added a lot of light relief to the story and I hope we'll see more of him. There were just so many moments I loved about this book, particularly towards the end when Kate has a face off with the shapeshifter council to stand up for her man.
Lots of people have already reviewed this book and I'm not sure that I can articulate my thoughts well enough to come up with a coherent review so I'm just going to tell the rare few people who haven't started this series yet that they need to do it immediately. If you have started the series but are still playing catch up like I have been then you need to hurry up because the books really do just get better and better!
