A month ago, I quit my job and finally left my commitment-phobe boyfriend, then moved back to my hometown of Cockamamie, Tennessee, to take care of my newly widowed Aunt Deidre, who has dementia.
Somehow, I’ve stumbled my way into a murder investigation—like literally—and now I’m a suspect. Okay, so I told off the newly deceased old fart, but that doesn’t mean I’m the killer.
And the idiot detective? Sure, he’s insanely hot, but it turns out he’s the grandson of my grandmother’s nemesis. I’m sure he’s holding that against me.
So now my life’s a complicated mess. I need to clear my name, make sure my aunt doesn’t wander off again, and find the killer since the Cockamamie taxpayers seem to be wasting their money on Detective Langley’s salary.
Oh, and I really need a job.

About the author

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became nomadic, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.

The story line flows so well. There is enough mystery that while you might think you have it figured out, the depth and characters have you guessing until the end. There is budding romance, friendship, conflict, fear, anger, sympathy and enough of all of it to make you hungry for the next book.
Amazing job as always Denise and love the characters. I'm in awe of how you have so many phenomenal stories, characters and series. I not only recommend this book but all of Denise's books. You seriously could pick anyone of them and not be disappointed. I read about 130-150 books per year and she is by far one of my favorite authors (and not just because she is a fellow Missouri girl ;)
Why are you still reading reviews.....buy the book already people, it's totally worth it!
Pleasantly atypical of DGS’s other mysteries, you see the perspective of both the male and female leads. It’s great to see the conflicts going on inside both their heads. It adds complexity to both the investigation (the “by the book” investigation Noah is forced to lead and the less restrictive “I have to find out” one Maddie is forced into to clear her name) and the “will they or won’t they” potential romance that has major roadblocks from baggage both leads carry (and recognize).
The characters are real and relatable, and for a murder mystery plot line, the story is believable (with real laugh out loud AND cheerable moments!).
I read as much as I could and avoided the real world and my kiddos while reading.
The first novel in this series is a addicting, heart pumping, and emotional read.
I absolutely love Maddie and Noah. I really enjoyed reading the duo POV. It was nice to see what each of them was thinking.
I feel like the book has a little bit of everything.
Great banter, complicated past, humor, slow burn romance, great secondary characters, and a good small town mystery or two.
The story has more than enough to keep the reader enthralled, and I cannot wait for the next book. Be ready to meet the Butcheress of Cockamamie.

I loved all the characters. There’s nothing better than a great cast of characters. I know Noah was to die for but can we just talk about Lance for a minute? 🥰 I wouldn’t be opposed to Lance and Mallory hitting it off. I loved Maddie. Her sass and sarcasm but her fierceness!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I made SO many notes while I read and they were all praise and fist pumps I felt like I conversated with her. 😂
If you’re one of those people that waits for a complete series, PLEASE for the love of all that is good in the world, I. AM. BEGGING. YOU. grab it now and hold onto it because THAT’S the ONLY way we’re gonna get more of this amazing book series!!!

On finishing the book I went straight to preorder the next book in the series.
If you enjoy quirky characters, mystery and romance then you won’t be disappointed.
