I love Oakland and the Bay but this show was just too forced, clunky, and corny
Born and raised in the Bay, I enjoyed Blindspotting the film but found this TV show to be clunky and forced. The so-called "surreal" elements felt way off and a lot of the conflict between characters didn't land. The jokes didn't land either. They were there but they were really flat -- possibly because they were too predictable. I don't think I laughed once unfortunately. Also, one thing I've often seen from some movies/shows about the Bay Area that I also see here is that they try really, really, really hard to let you know it's the Bay Area -- as if that's the most important thing about the show. In the long run that's fine I guess but not at the risk of the story making sense. This show will 100% definitely find an audience amongst those who will simply love seeing the Bay and Oakland repped in the mainstream no matter what, but in terms of story, writing, and character development it all felt too abrupt and superficial -- more about the quirks of Oakland and the Bay (and how many Hiero stickers they can fit on a wall) than about the characters and why you should truly care about them. I wanted to love it, but it just didn't work for me.

Still in WOakland Still with the jokes Still interesting
Blindspotting was my FAV movie of 2018. I was excited to find out that that co-creators/stars Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs got a spin off deal with STARZ to make it into a series. The show is still based in West Oakland, and this time Jasmine Cephas and her son Atticus Woodward are the main characters along with some new ones like Helen Hunt. It tries to capture some of the feel of the original like spoken word parts this time by Cephas, along with plenty of jokes. It also adds some surrealism like when movers bust out in dance to a Jazz tune. I’m not so hot on that part but the story is interesting, the jokes are still hitting and I’m excited to see where it goes after the first episode dropped.

Unique TV Series with Heart to Spare
What a lovely work of art. Blindspotting gives us fine art, street art, music, dance, poetry, love, comedy, tragedy, drama, philosophy and musical all in one 1/2-hour show.
Focused on life in modern day West Oakland, we meet a variety of characters which make up an extended family, we are shown their hopes and dreams, triumphs and losses, and struggles and blessings and heartbreaks.
While fairy tale endings aren't typical in Oakland, Blindspotting is something fantastical and fairytale-like, despite all the gritty realness, and provides a hungry -ney- starved viewer a smorgasbord, a horn-of-plenty, when it comes to feels, elicited thoughts and if you're lucky, revelations. Bravo Daveet Davidson, and everyone spinning this magic. This 58 year old Bay Area kid sees you. #OneNationUnderAGroove #RIPSHOCKG

Hilarious, Beautiful, Heartbreaking, Trippy AF
I was born at Highland and grew up in OAK. I LOVED the movie this show was born from and I knew I'd like the series, too. Daveed, Rafael, and the whole entire cast are INCREDIBLE. They are creating unique art - so refreshing, so beautiful - like nothing else on TV. I crack up, I cry, I marvel, I'm in awe . . . Love the ode to the The Town, all the easter eggs every episode, the music, the dancing . . . It's my favorite thing to watch right now. Thank you for the ART & love.

Lovely Show
I didn't think that this TV show could live up to the marvelous film of the same name by the same creators. I was wrong. This is a lovely show that captures so much of what is special about the Oakland/East Bay area. Its use of dance is especially effective and affecting. The whole thing is made with a lot of heart and a lot of talent, and (along with the sadness and melancholy) some spot on humor as well. Thanks to all involved.
