Nora Roberts, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the epic Year One returns with Of Blood and Bone, a new tale of terror and magic in a brand new world.
They look like an everyday family living an ordinary life. But beyond the edges of this peaceful farm, unimaginable forces of light and dark have been unleashed.
Fallon Swift, approaching her thirteenth birthday, barely knows the world that existed before―the city where her parents lived, now in ruins and reclaimed by nature since the Doom sickened and killed billions. Traveling anywhere is a danger, as vicious gangs of Raiders and fanatics called Purity Warriors search for their next victim. Those like Fallon, in possession of gifts, are hunted―and the time is coming when her true nature, her identity as The One, can no longer be hidden.
In a mysterious shelter in the forest, her training is about to begin under the guidance of Mallick, whose skills have been honed over centuries. She will learn the old ways of healing; study and spar; encounter faeries and elves and shifters; and find powers within herself she never imagined. And when the time is right, she will take up the sword, and fight. For until she grows into the woman she was born to be, the world outside will never be whole again.

Ms. Roberts did bring Book 2’s storyline to a close, avoiding a cliffhanger-like ending. The action and the constant danger in Book 1 takes a back seat to character development and setting up the story for an all-out war between the factions of black and white, good and evil. If you are one of the few who haven’t read Book 1 yet, my advice would be to start there. Although there are plenty of references back to the beginning of the story, you will not understand exactly who all the supporting and minor characters are, which will subtract from your enjoyment of what is an entertaining series.
Fallon Swift is the focus of this book. She is The One, the warrior of the prophecies that promise of her coming to lead the army of light against the forces of darkness. “Of Blood and Bone” leads us on a journey through her years of training, and allows readers a deep look into the person who will undoubtedly be at the forefront of Book 3.
This is not just another apocalyptic tale, although one might suspect this might be the case, what with the combination of emergent magic, declining civilization, and the resurrection of weapons of former wars. The author melds good storytelling and dialogue with descriptive passages that reveal much about the main characters.
While I am personally not happy with the fact that I have to wait until Ms. Roberts’ fertile imagination can produce Book 3, this is a series worth reading. It combines realism with the fantastic, giving us a strong glimpse into a world that might never come to pass. Five stars.

In this second instalment we see Fallon's training and become more familiarised with the various 'creatures' who inhabit the earth. The story moves back and forth between Fallon and her family and Arlys and the community at New Hope. We are shown how things have developed in the world post Doom and how the various factions have developed. While some want to live in peace and harmony, others are drawn to the darker side of life; torturing, killing vandalising and of course creating a power base.
Fallon, the homesick teenager develops her fighting skills and her magic. She becomes The One as she was always meant to be but still has to develop her skills. At the same time we see Duncan in New Hope, developing his innate abilities and the two connect in dreams and visions until they finally meet. All is not rosy between them but they do have a deep connection.
Throughout, although we witness cruelties, skirmishes and battles we are waiting for the real battles to begin and are left in no doubt at the end of the book that the worst and hopefully the best is yet to come.
In the first book of this trilogy written in 2017, I found she was writing about a global pandemic! Precience or what? In Of Blood and Bone she moves on 13 years, and develops the characters we met in Year One. I love books featuring sorcery and magic, and sometimes wonder if Nora Roberts is wiccan , she seems to know her subject so well. Thorough research perhaps! I like a hero - Jack Reacher's my No. 1, but a 15 year old girl is quite acceptable.
And what's not to love about a spirit owl, wolf and winged unicorn?
What impressed me most is that this basically is a "Hero's Journey". And I tend to hate Hero's Journeys. But this one is so well written with such great characters that I have to moderate my stance to "I hate most Hero's Journeys, but not all"
Some nitpicking: NR could have researched guns and what a post apocalyptic society would look like a bit more, but still not a major problem and the book is highly enjoyable anyway!
I have just downloaded book three and I can't wait to get started.
Nora Roberts is such an amazing storyteller, I can't say how many of her books I have read as I have lost count. Each and everyone of them have a special quality, I can honestly say that I have never read one of her books and been disappointed.
I would definitely recommend that you read this series, you will not be disappointed.
