The Destroyermen saga continues! Even though you almost have to take ongoing notes, as multiple and parallel story lines unfold. You'll develop a sharper sense of memory while doing so. With two war fronts now to contend with (going on three?).. the war in the West and the war in the West, there is absolutely no "dead time" or "fill" within the chapters of this book. Taylor's writing skills continue to improve with each passing submission. Character development in this particular edition is extremely satisfying to those who wanted more of their favorites "flashed out". The Grik are quickly evolving into.. into something that's wildly unexpected and interesting, drawing you down into that subplot. Buy this book, I think it will be a fine addition to yours and to my own growing collection of "Destroymen" gems.

Maybe the magic is gone; maybe I'm being too critical.

While the year wait was expected, the result wasn't. This felt like the shortest book and I didn't feel it measured up to earlier books in the series. The writing seems to have become formulaic; I knew exactly how the characters would react to the increasingly transparent plot line. Good guys win one, bad guys win one, the main characters are in turn surprised, emotionally tortured, vengeful then finally resolute. I know the sounds like it must have been an action-packed volume, but it's wasn't. Nothing happens in this book. I didn't feel vested in any of the characters or their actions this time around. Hopefully this is similar to the set-up episodes before a season finale or I may give up on the investment in this series.

Overextended Cash Cow Ruins Good Story Telling

I once loved this series. I emailed the author and we exchanged a few comments. I told him that while the books were wonderful, there IS a limit to a series or it just becomes a money ripping cash cow. I mentioned the "Wheel of Time" syfy series that never ended and had to be completed by another author when the original one died. That's how long this ridiculously overdrawn series existed. The author told me that this would never happen with the "Destroyermen" series! Guess what! It sure has. I have to tell you that Taylor Anderson, for all his nice qualities, is doing exactly the same thing. This series will probably NEVER end and one day I expect to see a USS Enterprise aircraft carrier, of a Gerald Ford class only now on the drawing board, to enter the vortex and appear on the alternative Earth. THAT'S how long I fear this series without end will go on. Sadly, if he cut it and began a SECOND series, it would restore some freshness to the story. Right now each book becomes more repetitive and overfilled with military maneuvers and, even for a confirmed Clancy aficionado, INADEQUATE character development. All we hear about is repairs and blabber. Very little real action that is up front and personal. Very detached and lacking that intimacy good books provide. Taylor, keep your promise and get to the END of this storyline. You can always re establish a NEW storyline WITH the same characters but this one needs to terminate. Soon.

This felt more like a recap of all the previous books, where everybody was re-introduced. It was very slow in the beginning, but it got up in gears after a while. I felt like this was one of those episodes in you favorite TV-show where nothing really happened but setting up the field for the next one and making sure everybody knows who the players was. the writing is still superb, the characters and whole universe are still widely entertaining, even though I personally that the "Japhs" and especially their leader (who is so crazy its just about loosing credibility he can perform) have outlived their stay.
For me its not an issue if this series stays on for many years, but it would be nice if we could loose some of the weight from "the old world" and maybe go north and see what up...theres probably not any Griks there but probably a lot of other interesting things... Its fine the Grik menace has to be dealt with in a satisfying way and there is the other factions of enemies that demands a proper asskicking which Im sure there is lined up. But I am for one, grown tired of Kurokawa and his minions. Looking forward to the next book as always, but do wish it comes out a bit sooner...a year + between each is quite a wait in a series that connects all books to eachother.

In the West, Blood in the Water clearly defines The League of Tripoli as a duplicitous enemy of the Alliance. In the East, representatives of the Alliance finally reach the New Americans. Some of the action and plot details are a little predictable to those of us who have read the entire series to date. This is common when reading a series. After all, Dennis Silva IS Dennis Silva and will act as he does. However, Mr. Anderson keeps it interesting. After reading a couple of poorly edited books and some with poor grammar, style and word choices, it was a welcome relief to return to an author who can actually write as well as tell a story.

To be honest, this was ok, but probably the weakest in the series - it feels very much like a filler, with (relatively) little in the way of action cum plot development . That said, it is still a fun read and hopefully a few of the plot devices that have been hinted at will play out in the next book.
