I really liked this story and the way that it explored the history of Paris and got the characters wrapped up in the events that were taking place. I also liked that it could easily be a stand alone book with its own main focus, along with being part of the bigger trilogy and storyline. The characters were well developed and the action kept me interested throughout. I think that fans of thrillers and mysteries will enjoy this as it does a nice job of blending the two genres together.
The author’s infectious prose works on every level, especially in a sci-fi time travel fantasy for young readers. He sets the tone for this airborne story in the opening lines: “Opening her eyes, Iris Jongler-Jinks remembered shouting, “But I’m going to the prom!” Then everything had gone white. Was it a dream? Iris wondered as she took in her new surroundings. Am I still dreaming? She seemed to be standing in a glass box or booth. Outside the glass, thick gray fog slowly churned. The fog triggered another image: white snakes of mist. It brought her full memory flooding back.’ In that brief passage, so much of the novel’s content is suggested as we soon discover.
Meehl has provided a new summary for this fine book, presented just before the story begins: ‘‘Amazon: Iris Jongler-Jinks is about to make her greatest discovery yet. If you want to rescue someone who’s lost in the past - DIY. In Blowback ’07, Iris discovered her family’s ancient cor anglais - the Horn of Angels - that sends time voyagers to the past. She’s certain it’s where her mother is - marooned in the past. In Blowback ’63, Iris discovered that her twin brother Arky is the worst time traveler to ever century hop. Now it’s Iris’s turn. She is hurled to a time that dreams are made of. A place where her quest to find their mom throws Iris into the company of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, and the most scandalous performer the Moulin Rouge has ever known. But Iris’s mission isn’t all legends and the City of Light. Her time-travel trashing brother crashes the party. And the siren calls of the past that seem to have bewitched their mother begin to work their spellbinding magic on Iris, and even Arky.’
This is a sparkling achievement in writing for youngsters – of any age! – and provides not only a fine adventure in time travel, but also adds witty asides, some history lessons, some romance and many tender moments. It is successful on every level. Very highly recommended. Grady Harp, March 21
The writing style of this book was fluid. It invites every reader to continue to read the story page by page because it has this exhilarating narration. There were lots of exciting things that happened in this story and those scenes are hard to forget. The theme of this story is quite different from most of the books and that makes it a unique novel. Consider it your next read!
