About the author

Hi, I've been living, studying and training in Japan for over 15 years. My goal is to share some of the cool, fascinating and mysterious teachings that can be found in Japanese martial arts manuals. For the most part these books have never been translated before. Thanks for your interest!

As a lifetime student of numerous martial arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-Do, Jojutsu, Hanbo-Jutsu, Wakizashi-Jutsu, Tanto-Jutsu, Kenjutsu, and numerous other martial art and self-defense systems) for more than 7 decades, I found this old manual on the basics of Bojutsu very interesting and informative. Even though this book is written in Japanese, the translator of this text does a very good job of explaining the techniques in English. The photographs are black and white and not very clear because of the age of this book; nevertheless, because I was familiar with the techniques shown I easily understood the material.
Like any how-to-book on the martial arts this one has the normal limitations, and this is why I always stress (even in my own manuals) that books are great, but they are best combined with actual hands-on lessons from a qualified instructor. Interestingly, most of the Bo techniques taught in this volume can also be applied to using the bokken (wooden sword) or the Katana (Japanese long sword).
If you love reading old martial art, weapon, and self-defense manuals this is a book you will want for your personal library collection.
Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Hanbo-Jutsu: Use of the Hanbo, Cane and Walking stick for self-defense).
the use of the tanbo instead of hanbo is interesting side bit...
