The first novel in the David Wolf series, Foreign Deceit, is an international mystery-thriller he wrote while living in Italy for a year with his wife and son. The next thirteen books in the still ongoing series are set in the mountain-western United States.

Jeff acquired a love for adventure-thriller-mystery-suspense fiction at a young age by listening to audio books while driving the vast landscapes of the western U.S. with his family. One leg of a trip from Denver to Payette, Idaho (to visit relatives) was enough time to squeeze in a good Cussler, a Christie, a Child, a Silva, a Box, a Flynn, or one of the others he considers master story-tellers. Now he incorporates many the same elements of those authors in his own writing.

Jeff and his wife, Cristina, currently live with their two sons in Colorado.

I love these books and can't wait to get the next one. I was pleasantly surprised to see the hero in this one David Wolf did not get injured. Now I am in hopes Carson will at least let him have a chance at some peace and a good relationship with both his son and a romantic partner. The characters are becoming well developed and seem to be people I would like being around. Please keep up the good work I like to dive into books that hold my interest and have a nice mystery. With Carson's books I appreciate the clean story line and the minimum of bad language and long tedious sexual relationships. So many pages filled with graphic sex means the writer has nothing to say and can't add to the story line. Jeff Carson's books leave all that stuff out because he does have a a lot to say. This one was a little too short. Sonow I have to wait for the next one. Thanks for a really good book Mr. Carson.

"To the Bone" was a multi-layered novel. The police procedural/mystery wasn't terribly suspenseful or rapidly moving, but the author invested a lot into the main characters and their relationships. David Wolf once a sheriff of a smaller county is now a detective after his former county was joined to another. He and his son, Jack are still getting back on their feet after the loss of his wife. When Jack's girlfriend's father is shot, Wolf is in charge of finding the culprit. A student in a local archeological dig disappears and other students become suspect in an illegal procurement and sale of dinosaur bones off a protected site. Wolf's sensitivity to others, bring out nuances of individual struggles and the reader is drawn into the inner workings of this small community surrounding Wolf and how they are influenced by each other. The reader is drawn into the microcosm of characters and unite with Wolf as he evaluates and disregards one suspect following another. The plot was complex with sufficient red herrings to hold your interest, although I read it over the course of a week, rather than a single sitting as is my usual approach, the holidays may have had a bit of influence in that regard.

I have a hard time putting it down and trying for some sleep. These stories are that good. I like the character development along with the descriptions of the various locations and the twists and turns in each case. Just about the time you are thinking that you are starting to figure out what has happened and who the bad guys are the next chapter proves you wrong. One thing of particular note is that I don’t seem to be finding the grammatical errors that are so prevalent in writing lately. Kudos to Jeff Carson for not only being self published but for having such a command of the English language and has either amassed a great team for editing and advice or is that much better. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series

A mystery within a mystery

Book 7 or possibly 8 if you count the short story that introduced the reader to the characters. This book takes a strange twist away from all that has gone on before. The scene is only a short time after the conclusion of book 6 yet seems to have gone years forward in time. The protagonist's son will be remembered as a young child having trouble coping with his losses but now is on the verge of becoming a man. The protagonist has a new job and we are really left wondering why as it applies to the story line. The plot of the story is a bit of a stretch and the investigation looses a lot of the intrigue that past stories have provided the reader. Perhaps the biggest mystery of all is why a large prosperous county in Colorado would want to annex a small broke county into it's folds and then move it's seat of power into a new multi-million dollar facility in the middle of the smaller poverty stricken county. Perhaps future books will explain this. This is a well written book that is still interesting to read but has taken a step back from the earlier stories. Do not miss this story because book 8 is on the way.

I love the David Wolf series. There is a great core of continuing characters that continue to develop. Then there are the single book characters that are interesting as well. There is a solid plot with enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The murderer is not obvious. I thought this was a good Wolf novel. Not quite as good as Smoked Out where Wolf was fighting for his life and seriously injured. But still To The Bone is a solid murder mystery. I'm sorry to find that there is only one more published Wolf novel to read and hope that Carson is writing quickly! I suggest reading these books in order to better understand and appreciate the characters.

Ryan Frost was a man well known in the "ancient fossils trade circles" and had made a one million dollars sale prior to his death... Wolf gets help from Jet and Sheriff Shumway of Windfield County chasing down the clues...

This book goes from Rocky Point to Winfield County, where Ryan Frost had a secret dig site. The storyline is interesting and the reader is invited to follow the clues and develop new leads with Wolf and Shumway. As the bodies pile up, they will have to work fast so they are not the next victims...

I really enjoy reading the books in this series. They are full of twists, turns and surprises. I never figure out the whodunnit before the culprit is revealed. These are really good suspense thrillers!

AfterThoughts: I have read about the Dinosaur Ridge, Colorado dig sites (east of Denver) and the dinosaur species Allosaurus. I could not help but wonder if this is the area Mr. Carson was writing about...
Typos/Errors kept this book from being a five star review (examples: "he shivered and blinked the thought out of his mind." ... "“I don’ think that’s necessary at all." ... "...bending over the seat to pet Jack" — the dog's name is Jet, Jack is Wolf's son).

Det. David Wolf doesn't let his superior officer or a high flown senator intimidate him. People
have to earn his respect. At the same time, he treats the team under him with consideration - so
earning their total loyalty (with one exception!).

He is investigating the murder of the father of his son's girlfriend. The senator had paid the man a million
dollars for a dinosaur skeleton, which is missing, along with the money of course. Wolf takes his ex-police dog,
Jet, along with him, despite the dog's big flatulence problem! However, the dog proves his worth on several
occasions.

More murders are uncovered and there was obviously a conspiracy to sell the skeleton illegally - but who is
involved and who masterminded the operation? I didn't really guess the mastermind.

The rest of the team of detectives also made discoveries which helped with the investigation - despite the interference
of Wolf's boss, the Sherrif.

I enjoyed the book as it was a bit different from the usual murder mysteries where various suspects are questioned over
and over, repeating the same information.

Good pacing and an intriguing puzzle with some subtle red herrings and believable characters. Carson handles his material like a true craftsman and I am glad to have discovered this series.

Not saying it's perfect. I struggled to keep up with the number of characters and the timeline. I also thought it wouldn't take much for Wolf to become cliched, and though I liked the happy ending, I'm not sure it added to the book.

If it's true what other reviewers say - that this isn't the best of the series - I'm looking forward to reading some of the others.

This is the second book I've read in the David Wolf series and I thought it was really well plotted. Wolf is a likeable character as are the members of his team. Some of the relationships are quite complex and I feel this gives depth to the story as does the beautifully described setting. You could really feel the dry heat at times and visualise the beauty of the surroundings. I thought this was a good, solid, murder mystery and feel the background of palaeontology gave it a different slant, even though there could have been a little more detail here. Nevertheless, it was different enough to catch and hold my attention and I enjoyed the book very much.

I have read all so far and definitely itching to get the others in series. The whole Wolf series is action packed, full of thrills, some humour, love and life so plenty for everyone
