In _Bone Deep_, White writes about the distant geological past of Florida, and the tremendous wealth to be gained from it: not only the mining of phosphorus, but also fossil-hunting (phosphorus mines are rich with bones and shells from eons ago). The very real struggle and competition between land developers, mining, archeology and environmentalists are all expertly woven into a compelling (and sometimes poignant) tale. OF the last 8 or so Doc Ford novels, this is easily one of my favorites. If you are unfamiliar with White's work, you are in for a treat, For those who have read some of his earlier work, this one is a real gem. Recommend reading - especially for summer.
This one I found particularly engrossing because as a child, I really was quite the fossil and rockhound. I never knew about the phosphate mines in Central Fla. being a rich source of fossils. I grew up on Venice Beach, thinking the occasional Megalodon tooth or mammoth molar was the pinnacle of fossil finds! Thanks Mr White for yet another great SW Fla adventure and keep them coming!
The book is more character driven than plot driven. The supporting cast consists of Hannah, Doc Ford's on again off again girl friend, Tomlinson, a new age guru who teaches yoga, and Quirt, a psycho killer who is trying to poach the fossilized ivory on the property where Ford is working and Toby the elephant who is retired on this same plot of land and takes a dim view of the poachers.
The book is engaging and interesting because of the Florida ambience and atmosphere. Doc
Ford's Florida is a dangerous and exotic locale. It is the Florida of Key West, Captiva and Sanibel islands, mangrove jungles, and swamps and gators and snakes and Sunday night neighborhood shrimp roasts.
It is an action adventure thriller which I highly recommend.
This story is about crooks stealing and selling relics that they find in the swamps of central Florida. It is well written and holds your interest, but the ending is slightly more predictable than most of Mr. White's books.
But fans of Doc Ford and Tomlinson will not be disappointed with this one. And I confess, I am a huge fan.

After twenty entries in this series, White is having a hard time coming up with effective plotlines. This one is over the top and not particularly well written. He says he writes this stuff in a bar. It`s beginning to show.
