Besides being such a great read, it was also incredibly heartbreaking on many counts. Seeing Noah lose his precious mother, hearing about what a terrible father he has and learning about his family all while questioning what kind of person his mother really was… well, I won’t go into detail, so I don’t spoil it, but I will say, it kept me up at night trying to finish. I couldn’t put it down and then when I had too, I kept thinking about it.
I could have done without all the difficult moments between Josie and Noah. I almost had a heart attack a couple of times, and then I wanted to smack Noah and his sister for their BS, but I survived, and so did they. I’m really curious to see what Josie and Laura’s relationship becomes in the next book. Josie has the patience of a saint when she needs too.
In this book, we get to see the return of Luke, Josie’s ex-fiancé. It was a nice surprise, and I enjoyed getting caught up on his story. We also get to see Chief Chitwood relax a little and learn to have more trust in his team. He might even show a smile or two. We get to see Gretchen return to work and slowly regain the trust of her boss and the community. And we also get a glimpse of what happens when Josie falls off the wagon and starts drinking again. She’s been pretty strong-willed, but the woman isn’t perfect.
This book weaves a story so intricate and detailed, I’m not even sure what to say about it. As soon as you think you have it figured out, you turn the page, and something new happens, or another innocent person winds up dead.
This is an absolutely perfect 5-star read! Lisa Regan at her very best! Check it out. You won’t regret it.
I would read the books in order as there are a lot of characters that intermingle throughout the books and the backstory is very interesting.

This instalment kicks off with the body of a family member related to Noah. This murder opens Pandora’s box because bodies have buried and a long held mass killing secret is about to be unraveled.
As Josie digs deeper into the case the culprits are killing off anyone who may know the truth.
This case causes friction between Josie and Noah because she has to interview some of his family members. He knows she is doing her job deep down inside but he is powerless because of his connection to the victim he cannot be involved in the case.
The culprits seem to be one step ahead of Josie and her team. When they finally catch up-to a possible suspect they realise there is another culprit very close to home, Will Josie and her team wrap up the case in time before more bodies are dropped…..
I am happy that the continued trend of having one character related to the crime at hand has continued. In the last book it was Gretchen and in this book it has been Noah. It was interesting to see a grieving Noah and see how he handled things because I had always viewed his character with affection and hope in terms of Josie and to see him act in a different way was both interesting and eye-opening. Josie handled his behaviour though the book with grace and courage and it was curious to see how the two of them dealt with the hardships and the events presented and managed to pull through. I felt I learnt a lot more about the characters without actually being given a lot more information about them. It was through their actions and how they interacted with other characters and the scene around them that I felt I got to know them better, rather than from information or description.
As there have now three books that focus on event centred around one character – ‘Her Mother’s Grave’ [Josie], ‘Her Final Confession’ [Gretchen], and ‘The Bones She Buried’ [Noah], – I’m interested to see what direction the sixth book will take.
As I read this off the back of the fourth book, everything was still fresh in my mind but beyond that I feel that I have spent enough time in this story universe to be well acquainted with what is happening to the characters and around them. With each book I read my imagination only gets stronger and my ability to visualise clearer.
I found this book more compelling that book four. I was more invested in this story and more compelled to find the answers. Regan has the ability to draw me into both parts of the story. the present and the past, and drag me into her carefully thought out plot. I get a sense of excitement when I start reading one of her books and am always surprised at the turn taken and the final outcome. I felt that this book did its job in keeping me curious and surprised and entertained enough to want to keep reading. The plot is always fleshed out and curious in the way it explores what has happened in a language that doesn’t reveal the culprit ahead of time.
5 stars from this happy reader. Now for Book 6
