As the owner of Miracle Books, Nora Pennington figures all the wet weather this spring is at least good for business. The local inns are packed with stranded travelers, and among them Nora finds both new customers and a new friend, the sixtysomething Sheldon, who starts helping out at the store.
Since a little rain never hurt anyone, Nora rides her bike over to the flea market one sodden day and buys a bowl from Danny, a Cherokee potter. It’ll make a great present for Nora’s EMT boyfriend, but the next day, a little rain turns into a lot of rain, and the Miracle River overflows it banks. Amid the wreckage of a collapsed footbridge, Danny's body lies within the churning water.
Nora and the sheriff both doubt the ruling of accidental drowning, and Nora decides it’s time for the Secret, Book, and Scone Society to spring into action. When another body turns up, it becomes clearer that Danny’s death can’t be blamed on a natural disaster. A crucial clue may lie within the stone walls of the Inn of Mist and Roses: a diary, over a century old and spattered with candle wax, that leads Nora and her friends through a maze of intrigue—and onto the trail of a murderer . . .

The Secret, Book & Scone Society
“Adams launches an intriguing new mystery series, headed by four spirited amateur sleuths and touched with a hint of magical realism, which celebrates the power of books and women’s friendships. Adams’s many fans, readers of Sarah Addison Allen, and anyone who loves novels that revolve around books will savor this tasty treat.”
—Library Journal (starred review), Pick of the Month
“Adams kicks off a new series featuring strong women, a touch of romance and mysticism, and both the cunning present-day mystery and the slowly revealed secrets of the intriguing heroines’ pasts.”
“This affecting series launch from Adams provides all the best elements of a traditional mystery. . . . Well-drawn characters complement a plot with an intriguing twist or two.”
“Adams’ new series blends magical realism, smart women, and small-town quirks to create a cozy mystery that doubles as a love letter to books. Readers will fall in love with Nora’s bookstore therapy and Hester’s comfort scones. Not to mention Estella, June, hunky Jed the paramedic, and Nora’s tiny house-slash-converted-train-caboose . . . a book that mystery fans—and avid readers—won’t want to put down until they have savored every last crumb.”

There were some new characters in this book, and I really loved them. My favorite was Sheldon. I liked how he accepted everything that he was, knew his limitations, but still insisted on doing everything he liked. He has a lot of charm and spunk, plus he brought something new to the group of friends. I think fans are going to love him! for me, this is a five star book!
On the adult content scale, there's language, violence and some sexual content as well as talk of living with an addiction. None of it's too over the top... I would say, maybe, 16 and older? Let's give it a five.
I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!
Fiction imitates reality, and the ever present, torrential rainstorms in the town of Miracle Springs, NC is no exception. As I read this book, my own river was forming in my backyard, and I could sympathize/emphatize with Nora and her friends. A new visitor comes to Miracle Springs and seems to be in need of the bibliotheraphy Nora offers, plus the healing powers of that special scone.
We are introduced to a young Cherokee potter and his wife who give us insights into the Cherokee heritage of the region and the sudden death of the young man brings all out friends together to solve the mystery of his death. His family and friends find the solution to the mystery, but also uncover more personal revelations about themselves.
We also find a new barista, with new food and drinks. I still do not understand how I am ravenous after each reading session.
Although I reside in NC, NC girl born and reared, I still can't seem to find Miracle Springs, except in my heart and mind as I read Ms. Adams books. I'm ready to take up permanent residency. I am on my second "reading" of the book as my audio book was available today.
I am truly a happy camper with a new book at hand.
“The Book of Candlelight” is the nicely done third book in Ellery Adams Secret, Book, and Scone Society Mystery Series (due to some slightly rough language and themes I am not quite sure I would label this a cozy mystery but it is close to being one). Nora is one of the most complex characters that I have come across in a mystery. She is deeply flawed and scarred (both physically and mentally) and not always the easiest person to get along with – frankly there were times I didn’t like her but she lingered in my mind long after I finished reading the book. She may not always be likable but she is a fiercely loyal friend who cares about people perhaps more than she realizes. Her friends Estella, June, and Hester are also richly drawn characters who also have flaws and troubled backgrounds – one of those troubled backgrounds adds a second mystery to the book which is nicely done but heartbreaking. Sheldon is a new character in this book and I can’t begin to describe how much I like him as a character – I look forward to reading more about him in future books. The mystery itself is well done with more than a few surprises and tinged with sadness.
“The Book of Candlelight” is another nicely done mystery by Ellery Adams.
The murder was a terrible thing to happen and I felt sorry for Danny’s wife. Left to raise their baby by herself, but also with the help of her new friends. I foresee her grieving and the. Growing stronger from the blow she was dealt.
I was glad to see that Jed and Nora have seemed to grow closer in this book and I’m really rooting for them!
I can’t wait for the next book in this series. It’s probably my favorite series of Ellery Adams, even though I like them all!
