In this novel in the New York Times bestselling Bibliophile Mystery series, San Francisco book-restoration expert Brooklyn Wainwright’s latest project is for the birds, but it may have her running for her life. . . .
Brooklyn’s friend runs the Covington Library, which is hosting an exhibit featuring John James Audubon’s massive masterpiece, Birds of America. During the gala celebrating the book, she is approached by Jared Mulrooney, the president of the Bay Area Birdwatchers Society, to repair a lesser known book of Audubon drawings.
At the same party, Brooklyn is flying high after she’s asked to refurbish a rare copy of Poor Richard’s Almanack when Mulrooney’s body is discovered in the library. Soon more troubles ruffle Brooklyn’s feathers. Her parents pop in for a visit with an unsavory friend in tow, and there’s a strange man on her tail. With danger beginning to circle Brooklyn’s every move, it’s clear she must find answers before things really go south. . . .

New York Times bestselling author Kate Carlisle is a native Californian who worked in television production for many years before turning to writing. It was a lifelong fascination with the art and craft of bookbinding that led her to write the Bibliophile Mysteries, featuring Brooklyn Wainwright, whose bookbinding and restoration skills invariably uncover old secrets, treachery and murder. Her first book, Homicide in Hardcover, debuted in February 2010, followed by If Books Could Kill, The Lies That Bind, Murder Under Cover, One Book in the Grave.
With the publication of A High-End Finish in November 2014, Kate launched the Fixer-Upper Mysteries featuring building contractor Shannon Hammer, who specializes in Victorian home renovation and repair. The series is set in Lighthouse Cove, a seemingly idyllic town with many dark secrets hiding under its floorboards. Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel is bringing the Fixer-Upper Mysteries to TV in a series of movies starring Jewel and Colin Ferguson. The first movie premiered in January 2017, the second less than three months later, with plans to film several more.
Kate's television credits include numerous game shows, music videos, concerts, and variety shows, including The Midnight Special, Solid Gold and The Gong Show. She traveled the world as a Dating Game chaperone and performed strange acts of silliness on The Gong Show, most notably as a member of the girl group, The Whispers. They didn't sing, exactly, but spit water on the host of the show.
Kate also studied acting and singing, toiled in vineyards, collected books, joined a commune, sold fried chicken, modeled spring fashions and worked for a cruise ship line, but it was the year she spent in law school that finally drove her to begin writing fiction. It seemed the safest way to kill off her professors. Those professors are breathing easier now that Kate spends most of her time writing near the beach in Southern California where she lives with her perfect hero husband.
Kate is a member of Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers and Romance Writers of America. She is the proud recipient of the Golden Heart and Daphne du Maurier awards, and her first Bibliophile Mystery received a Best First Mystery nomination from RT Book Reviews. Kate loves to travel and read and drink good wine and watch other people cook.

We meet an old friend of Derek's, Crane, who is in town to try to get his not so nice brother to come home. The Covington is hosting an Audubon exhibit of his masterpiece, Birds of America, a book that Crane's ancestor may have done some of the paintings for. At the gala for the exhibit, the president of the National Bird Watchers Society is murdered and of course, our heroine, Brooklyn found him.
In other news, Brooklyn has be asked to appraise and refurbish a rare copy of Poor Richard's Almanack, which would just be very cool, no matter who you are, her parents are in for a visit and boy, do they bring back a surprise!
Questions abound, who is the mystery man with her parents? Who is following Brooklyn and why? Why was the president of the bird watchers killed? Was it because of the Audubon book or some other plot? While Crane is so cool, why is his brother just the opposite and what is he up to? Will Brooklyn and Derek ever get to plan their wedding or will they just elope?
I could go on and on, but the best advice I can give you is to pick up a copy of Books of a Feather and find yourself immersed in a wonderful world, full of intrigue, laughter and love! Dive into Brooklyn and Derek's world, I promise you won't be disappointed or get your feathers ruffled!
I really enjoyed seeing Derek and Brooklyn settled in their condo enjoying their lives and each other. Of course, since this is a cozy mystery evil in the form of several murders comes their way.
Derek introduces Brooklyn to his childhood friend Crane, who is visiting from China on business. Crane's brother Bai lives in San Francisco and Crane wants Bai to return to China to see their Mother. Bai is in love and not inclined to go.
Brooklyn is busy repairing a number of first editions and as her and Derek's home is broken into she tries to figure out which of the rare books the thieves are after and why they are killing people to get it.
This was an engrossing mystery. The plot was intricate and ultimately the denouement had a twist I hadn't seen coming. Since it is now 5 AM, obviously I couldn't put it down. Wonderful mystery with people I really enjoy reading about and a lovely romance; perfect for me.
