Gravitas and style occasionally ruined by poor taste
Verified purchase
I loved this movie for what it does well: stone-cold gravitas and stylish ultra-violence. But before you watch this, you need to know what you are getting yourself into. This is Troy Duffy directing, and Troy Duffy is a mixed bag. And so is this movie.

First, the good. The violence is sufficiently violent, and almost devoid of suffering or gore. Not so much cartoonish as stylized, like ballet. Violence as art. Maybe I'm a bad person, but I really enjoyed Troy Duffy's strangely bloodless and painless ultra-violent death orgies. I am guessing it would be even more fun after a couple of beers.

Say what you want about her unconvincing Southern accent, but Julie Benz knocked my socks off with her depiction of a hot, mature, highly competent woman at home in her own skin and comfortable with her sex appeal. The shortcomings in the character as written were largely overcome by some highly enjoyable and incredibly professional acting on Benz's part. Wow.

Let's touch on the bad stuff so that you can decide if you want to put up with it. First, male nudity. I don't care what you do in your own home, have at it. But I do not want to see it. There was plenty of male nudity and, frankly, it annoyed me. Incontinence happened a couple of times and that annoyed me, too. If you can shoot several dozen holes in people without depicting blood, then you can avoid close-ups of potty accidents. Then there was the convoluted, half-baked plot twists. These certainly did not add anything to the movie, and they wasted time and strained my patience.

And yet, five stars. Here's the thing: the bad stuff in the movie wasn't very bad. The good stuff was super-duper-good. This movie really was a good time. If you are more sensitive to bad taste than I am, maybe give it a pass. Otherwise, dive in--this movie is a lot of fun.

Did the negative reviewers watch the same movie I just did?
Verified purchase
If you liked BS-1, you'll like BS-2 just fine. Don't listen to the negative reviewers, they obviously walked into this with certain predetermined prejudices so they could dislike this sequel to signal their "hipster wokeness". It carried all the verve, vigor, and style of the first, continued the story in a very believable and interesting fashion, and had just enough surprises to keep one watching and paying attention till the very end. In the middle of 2021, with all the social engineering crap going on with movies and tv series, this was a very welcome breath of fresh air.

Couldn't finish so yeah...

I watched the original in college. GREAT movie. So I gave the second movie a chance, and over two days I could not finish it, sadly. They tried to recreate the magic and used some the same concepts from the first movie with little success (to me) -- as in they are trying way to hard to mirror the first.

The FBI special agent is supposed to the female version from the first agent in the original, and she's pretty awful for this caliber of movie. She doesn't capture the first agent's feel (reminiscent of Back to the Future where they recast Marty with Michael J Fox after months of filming with the previous actor) so yeah, they should have recast her with someone else. The three detectives are again trying way too hard as did the mobsters. They draw too much from the first and causes the second to flop. Sigh. Good luck, maybe you will enjoy it. I didn't.

SO bad
Verified purchase
I wanted to like this movie. I LOVE the first one. But really, what a garbage sequel. It's confusing that it's this bad because they have some quality actors playing roles.

Some of the issues I have: they have the main (only) female character with this terrible southern accent. It was totally unnecessary for the character to have the accent. Moreover, the extra sexy portrayal of her character was not a helpful addition to the cast. Such a shame after the fantastic acting done by Willem Defoe in the first movie. Ugh. There are so many things I could say about why this is a bad movie. I shouldn't have purchased the rental, big regret. :(

I'm a fan of Boondock Saints - but it has a lot of violence
Verified purchase
Not for the faint of heart. Not for those that abhor violence (especially shooting on screen).

I won't get into plot much, but this takes place in Boston and follows two Irish brothers and their fight against mafia evils. The movie is told with the brothers point of view.

Willem Defoe plays and FBI special agent assigned to investigate the shootings and mafia warfare. While a big fan of Defoe, I object o certain character "traits" that he was given. Add nothing to the story line, in my opinion. But DeFoe is, as usual, great. The brothers are young and play their parts well.

If a viewer likes a lot of violence, mostly with a revenge theme, Boondock Saints is for you. The soundtrack has a lot of Irish "jigs" too. And of course, a small part of Boston is shown. It is not a tour of Boston at all.

It's ok, but maybe it'll get better the more I see it.

It started ok, but became too weird after a while and I quickly lost interest!! It's nowhere near as good as the first one!! I'm not saying, "don't waste your time", it just doesn't appeal to my short attention span.
××××××SPOILER ALERT!!! ××××××××××××
The end kinda left me Willem Dafoe's character really dead, or is that just his spirit, as we see Rock's spirit walking around at the beginning?!?! I'll have to see it again at a slower pace next time!! And take my meds right before as well!! LOL!! I hope it gets better because I already bought the damned thing! LOL!!!

It's just an imitation of the first film
Verified purchase
The first Boondock Saints was a hilarious action movie about the two brothers Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery so I was curious to see whether the sequel would be any good. It’s actually a bit disappointing because all they did was re-make the best elements of the original. For instance, there’s a smart talking FBI agent Julie Benz, the local Boston cops are still dumb, the characters make funny comments, etc. It’s still entertaining but it’s simply an imitation.

Not the worst in the world

So after watching the Office marathon I caught a scene with Michael's nephew where he says his favorite movies were Citizen Kane and Boondock Saints. I had never heard of it so I googled it and saw that it had the guy from the Walking Dead in it. Thought what the heck and watched 1 and 2 back to back. It's enjoyable enough but I don't see how anyone could give it 5 stars, much less call it their favorite movie. I saw in one of the reviews someone said "it was a believable movie". I mean, come on! It's a rather silly movie with some mediocre acting and some amateurish looking choreography and camera angles. It's a fun movie for those of us that enjoy glorified violence. Nothing more.
