In the Ichidian Universe no one was safe people were dragged from their homes and killed in the streets. Victims of a ruthless tyrant who was bent on being the sole ruler. Those who opposed him formed an alliance called The League, which fell under the leadership of the Quorum.
The Quorum realized that the best way to keep trouble from starting was to cut it off at its knees. So a separate group of soldiers was needed, The League Assassins. Highly trained and highly valued, they are the backbone of the government. But not even the League is immune to corruption...
Command Assassin Nykyrian Quikiades was born and trained to slaughter. Refusing to be a pawn, he turned his back on the League and has been hunted by them ever since. Though many have tried, none can kill him. Now his assignment is to protect Kiara Zamir, a woman whose father's political alliance has made her a target. She wants nothing to do with politics, yet she is forced to submit to protection or die.
And as her world becomes even deadlier, Kiara must entrust her life to the same kind of beast who once killed her mother and left her for dead. Old enemies and new threaten them both and the only way they can survive is to overcome their suspicions and learn to trust in the very ones who threaten them most- each other.

Bad prose. Bad dialogue. Bad story.
When does someone run at "fatal speed?" When does a "cold killer" waffle on like a brain-damaged boddice-ripper heroine? When do people slingshot between opposing motivations four and five times in a single paragraph?
The gaps, holes, unmotivated acts, and completely unhinged behaviors in this novel are insurmountable. Not to mention a technological, and world-building fiasco of epic scale.
I managed about 15% of it before I simply couldn't stomach it any longer. Save your money. I know I wish I had.
Nyk is a master assassin with a nightmarish past. The atrocious descriptions of abuse he suffered before he was taken to be trained by the league and after were hard to read. He is a hybrid, part human and part another race, and he is despised by both. He trusts no one and doesn't let anyone get close to him. He kills without mercy but has a soft spot for kids.
Kiara is a princes and a famous dancer. She is the doughter of a general and has a horrible past too. Her mother and she were kidnapped by assassins when Kiara was a little girl and they made her watch as they tortured and killed her mother, then shot her and left her for dead.
Kiara's life is threatened again when a government that wants to put pressure on her father hires assassins to kills her. Her father hires Nyk and his crew to protect her. Nyk is attracted to her but is afraid to let her get close to him and doesn't dare touch her. He was raised thinking he was worthless. He saves her life many times and she tries to get close to him but he pushes her away.
A sad but well written and engaging story.
This is an older book, and that was another reason I had avoided it. I have found that I don't enjoy older books as much because there is often something that "dates" it (like beepers!!). This is a timeless book. The world that is created within is so completely foreign that you are able to immerse yourself in it. It's magical, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books. I am now a DEFINITE FAN of Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Nykyrian is a government trained assassin. He is ruthless and the best of his kind. Kiara is a world class dancer from an aristocratic family. They both have tragic pasts and the love they find is "out of this world". The secondary characters are really interesting and I'm glad to know that the additional books each feature a different couple (much like the black dagger brotherhood). I am excited about this series.

I loved this book from the get go as something about it just grabbed me from page 1, I've struggled with sci-fi themes in the past, i.e. other worlds, space travel, different species etc but honestly didn't on this occasion and I can only contribute that to the authors stellar writing style.
The characters were well-developed and it was easy to care about what happened to them, Nykyrian & Kiara are polar opposites but you are routing for them and they have a lot of obstacles placed between them, not least themselves.
I will be continuing with this series and I can't wait to read Syn's story.
After being kidnapped, again, Kiara, daughter to a powerful player in interplanetary politics, finds herself under protection detail of Nykyrian and his merry band of misfits, outcasts, and other assorted deadly assassins.
Question is... who will get to Kiara first? and can Nykyrian keep her aline long enough to make her his?
In the interests of full disclosure, I should up front, this is totally NOT what I was expecting! I was, for some reason, expecting vampire assassins, bad ass dudes keeping the peace. NOW I know different and I'm not a single bit disappointed!
This is the first I've read of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books, and of The League, and it had been sitting on my wish list for some time. I bit the bullet and bought the 5 most expensive books off that list at beginning of August 2014 and this is the second Ive managed to find time to read.
This book has a lot going for it, it takes place in the solar system, somewhere, and has a huge assortment of aliens, hence the fantasy/sci-fi shelving. It has heat, BUT not as explicit as some books, it has violence, and that IS graphic, painful to read at times. It has all manner of back stabbing, double crossing, life threatening "people" (and I use the term loosely!) that some I just wanted to scream at and deliver unto them that which they deliver unto others. I mean, come on! (He'll hate me for saying this but poor) Nykyrian never had a childhood, and those people who made it such a hard time?? oh they get their comeuppence at Nykyrian's hand. Kiara, she led a sheltered life til she and her mother were kidnapped, after that, it became a prison of sorts. And while she doesnt understand, at the beginning, HOW Nykyrian and the others live the life they do, she comes to understand WHY.
I loved this, but couldnt quite stretch to the full five stars, I think it was the violence. Its quite intense, especially Nykyrian's childhood and move up the ranks of The League. the second book is safely on the wishlist, but now stands at the most expensive book there.
