Heart pounding and laugh out loud funny, USA Today best-selling author K.F. Breene will take you on a magical joy ride you won't soon forget.
Supernatural Bounty Hunter isn't the sort of thing you see on LinkedIn. But with a rare type of magic like mine, I don't have many options. Dangerous or not, the job is mine. And it was going fine, until an old-as-sin vampire stole my mark, and with it, my pay day. Knowing I'm poor and desperate, he has offered me a job. I'll have to work by his side to help solve a top secret case. Everyone knows not to trust vampires. Especially a hot elder vampire. But without any other jobs coming up, I'm stuck. As I uncover a web of lies and treachery, revealing an enemy I didn't know existed, the truth of my identity is threatened. I might make it out alive, only to end up in a gilded cage.

This storyline has me very intrigued. A couple times I had to go back and re-read things to get a handle on where the story went but that’s due to me & my speed reading!
I love these characters and want more! Onto book 2!
Many series out there, plenty of differences and nuances to all feel very different. I absolutely adore the Levelling Up series, and the Rose of Ruin series. However, I found myself kind of trudging through this Demon Days Vampire Nights series. I wont say it's bad, but I am not enamored like I am with the other two series I mentioned (I'm working through another series but cant recall the name. I like that too). This has a very low key spice level if you are scared of sexy stuff. This is super chill on that front, but it does have its moments.
In usual Breene style, the side characters are well done. They add a lot of color and interest to the environment. Yet, just something about this story isnt doing it for me. I've low level enjoyed it. That being said there are 11 books, and I have read 3. When I got to #4, I realized it was through the eyes of another character, and then I think there are 1-2 other books that have that before returning to the character we started with. I know it all comes together, but since I wasnt entirely vibing this story, the change in perspective is jarring. So I stopped. Giving it a break as decided I needed to move on to something else at this time. Maybe if I liked any of the characters enough, or liked the overall story enough. I will likely persevere, but right now I have set this series aside. I LOVE this writer, and not all the stories are the same.. so please give one of the series a try.
I suppose this series was OK. It definitely wasn’t a favorite of the Breene series I’ve read so far. I thought the world was interesting enough. And I liked the main character well enough. But I was just kind of underwhelming on the whole. Honestly, the side characters were my favorite part of the whole thing, and when the heroine and hero can so easily be outshone, there’s a problem of some sort.
I initially liked Reagan’s snark. But eventually, it just became a shtick. I liked that she’s strong and resourceful. But eventually, she just became so overpowered that the deus ex machina saves became the norm rather than the exception. I liked the love interest, but I never really felt the romance develop.
So, all in all, I’d call this a middling read. It’s not bad enough that I regret reading it. But it’s also not good enough that I continued into the next part of the series (focusing on Penny), even though I have it.

and didn't let go till the end. Can't wait to follow this series
I gave in and one-clicked this first of the series book, and actually enjoyed it. The anticipation draws you in, and as always, the fact that her imagery is so descriptive and vivid makes the events and characters all the more exciting and alive. Well, as alive as vampires can get - I love that this writer's got a knack for literary devices, and has a repertoire of colorful adjectives and verbs to assist in showcasing Reagan's very in-your-face style in speaking, fighting, and casting magic. Her temporary partnership with Darius is nothing short of spectacular as he appears able to not only keep up with her, but seems able and willing to take care of her and have her back the way no one else has managed to do before. This is a very good book, and portends a great series. Four stars.
As usual, I’ll be jumping right into the next book, but, this one can be read by itself. It had a nice self contained story and resolution, light on the romance, slooow burn, but still engaging. Excited to see where this series goes.

This is a good solid first book in a series. The world building is interesting, with witches, mages, vampires, shifters, demons and elves. We have different realms and the main female character, Reagan is undetermined for the majority of the book. Part of this reasoning is because she is hiding what she is from the rest of the world and we are in the dark as much as they are.
Reagan earns her very modest living by working as an independent supernatural bounty hunter. She wants to keep it secret what she is so she can’t work officially as an employee of the Magical Law Enforcement. She lives on the edges of society with no real friends, all in an effort to keep herself hidden.
When she winds up being coerced into working for the vampires, she ends up with a vampire partner, Darius, who is gorgeous, powerful, ruthless and very witty. The pair have great banter going on throughout the book.
The main focus of the book seems to be moving forward the plot and the humour. The character development was pretty shallow, but as this is the first book in the series I’m prepared to overlook that as the world building was strong.
I actually listened to this on audio using whispersync and Nicole Poole as narrator is a great choice. She has great delivery and the humour is elevated by her pacing. I’m always inclined to listen to the audio version if she’s narrating.
If I remember correctly, the rest of this series lives up to the promise of this first book, so I shall be diving in to the rest of the shortly. The light hearted approach to magic and violence is always a winner for me!

If you’re undecided on whether or not to give this series a go, I challenge you to read the sample and not want more. I may be a little biased as I’ve read other series by the author and have thoroughly enjoyed them but usually the first series/book I read by an author remains my favourite and yet this is fast becoming my favourite series by K.F. Breene to date. I love her imperfect characters, the sense of community she creates and the worlds in which it’s all based and ‘Born in Fire’ is no exception. Reagan – like Breene’s other heroines – is made more relatable by her quirks, even if they are a little extreme and rather unique to the character. It’s the little quirks though that make me love her, like; her inability to remember names, her propensity to lose her eyebrows, her inability to remain clean, her love of kicking in doors, etc. Normal is boring and Reagan is more than happy to embrace her inner crazy. Thankfully for her she lives on a colourful street in New Orleans where weird is wonderful, or at the very least expected. Her and a select group of her neighbours even band together to watch out for one another and watch over the cemetery in their neighbourhood. It’s hard not to like the odd group when they take pride in scaring tourists and wannabe witches away when they’re up to no good. Admittedly, that may not make much sense to you but once you read the book you’ll see why Reagan and her neighbours tickle me, since they are all as strange as one another. And while we’re talking crazy, Reagan picks up a couple of rather interesting side-kicks in the latter half of the book, and what they lack in conventionality, they more than make up for in knowledge and power. Now to Darius; an elder vampire and her reluctant partner. I’m not overly keen on Darius in this book, though I will admit that there are a few moments that make me think he may be redeemable. He’s certainly more likeable by the end of the novel than he is in the beginning and I’m not even being persuaded by the few steamy moments he and Reagan share. Or maybe I am. You’ll have to read and decide that for yourself.

Update: my partner generally reads business books and he was curious about the 'fantasy' books I read. I gave him this one and he completely devoured it. He has know finished the series and has moved on to Penny's books.

This new series certainly hit with a bang 😀 Reagan is a literal kick@ss heroine, who is of supernatural birth. She is a Bounty Hunter that needs to keep a low profile from the Werewolves as they police the Human realm & report to the Elves, who are in ultimate charge of all Supernaturals! As she smells mostly human to them she is left alone, mostly, to hunt for her bounties.
An ancient Vampire, Darius, that's out for himself & his species is tasked with supervising Reagan in an investigation. They clash in their methods but he's captivated by Reagan, her personality & her secrets!!
A couple of seemingly crazy old mages help Reagan. It turns out they have a past with her which is important!! So along with the actual lunatics that are murdering people & our colourful band of characters that make up the core of Born in Fire, what we have is a new fast paced, edgy, funny & sometimes dark Urban Fantasy with suspense & a whole lot of 'who dunnit? '
Hold on tight, I think this Trilogy is going to continue at pace, Yay!! 😁

The way the author builds her character, her likes and loves, her experiences and, especially, her magical abilities is mesmerising, not to mention the additional characters she meets along the way and how each of them also develop and interact. This is a brilliant, must-read series for anyone who enjoys paranormal fiction.
Oh, and by the way, the sex is just….phew!
