Guilt. a powerful thing. Feeling like people have taken advantage of me all my life, and that I've never been able to say no, I got this book by a recommendation of a therapist. Biblical. A little stereotypical on the family/home front, but the basics are there. Blown away by the helpful examples, and feeling much better about life in general. I am able to skip chapters and pages that don't really relate to me, and continue on where it does without any adverse effects. Make sure you believe in the Bible to read this, otherwise, it won't be helpful.

This would be a good book to read but not to listen to. I generally prefer audio books because I spent a lot of time on the road and it's convenient to listen to books in my car. This book has a serious and relevant subject matter but the narration is just plain comical. The narrator has a good voice -- a radio voice -- but is constantly trying to sound like a woman or a girl or a boy or an elderly person whenever he is quoting someone in one of those categories, and it's downright funny to hear him make those attempts. I think a female listening to this audio book might find his characterizations of women anywhere from condescending to demeaning. I can picture this guy as a preschool teacher reading story books to toddlers. Little kids might appreciate his audio depictions of children, women, elderly people and men other than himself. But as an adult male, I found his voice characterizations to be cartoonish and distracting from the content of the book. Is he trying to be the Mel Blanc of book narrations? I'm wondering why the publisher didn't just spring for a female co-narrator to do the female parts. But even in that scenario, I think it's fine to use the same voice throughout, because the listener would obviously know the narrator is providing a quote from the character that he or she just introduced. Mr. Narrator, we readers (or should I say, listeners) are not idiots. We know when you are portraying the viewpoint of a character in this book. You don't have to produce a cheesy voice for each of the countless persons (real or imagined) that are presented in the book. I'm still struggling to get through the entire audio book. I am genuinely interested in the subject matter. However, I'm not sure I'll make it to the end, having to hear this narrator and his non-stop parade of inane voice characterizations.

I have not read such a good book like 'Boundaries' in such a long time and I purchased four of them to hand them out as it gives you such insight into how we can take control of our lives in being able to be honest with those around us when we choose to say "yes", or "no"; learning how to be real and be a friend to ourselves. When we are being used and manipulative by others comes down to our responsibility, not theirs, and we have no one to blame but ourselves if we let that happen. To not be a doormat is vital to our contentment, peace and happiness, and that takes effort on our part to learn what to do. Manipulation and guilt comes along and what do we do? we bend and give in and in the meantime and then we resent, which is not healthy! That is not God's way at all and it is all in our reach to learn how to take control and live.

I liked many of the ideas and strategies in this book. However the relentless Bible quoting is a turn off and the religious influence should be made very explicit in the blurb. Also I have found a lot of the advice works if you are dealing with people within normative ranges, and not for chronic abusers or those with personality disorders.

It does kind of annoy me when books conceal the fact that they are a religious perspective. I don't understand why they do it, but I expect it's because people like me buy it without realising! It is an interesting book with lots of good stuff in it but from the marketing I couldn't tell it was based on teachings in the BIble. The only way I could tell, now I have it, is the fact that 'God' is mentioned at the end of the blurb. Until you start reading that is....
If you want to know about boundaries from the perspective of a psychotherapist read the book by Anne Katherine which is very good. I would have given this book more stars if I'd have bought it knowing it was from a religious perspective.

If you want to please everybody but suddenly it’s not as enjoyable and you find yourself unhappy, this is an absolute must-read. The messages and advice are firm but practical, sensible and logical advice to help bring you to a better place and find the balance. It was recommend by a few people on various occasions and once I started reading, I could see why as it’s such an eye-opener. It’s great that it has Biblical scripture for Christian readers but the principles are quite general too so I have recommended it to non-Christians too.

Overall I feel it's really valuable to those who've been caught up in serving too much or are being taken advantage of by other people in their lives. If you're burned out or feeling resentful of doing too much in church or Christian life this book will hopefully help you establish some healthy boundaries. Good luck!

Setting boundaries sounds negative but actually it is valuable. And I need to take responsibility for them. As a people pleaser by nature, I hate conflict and confrontation and I will always look for the easy route. This book reminded me, even taught me that boundaries are healthy for both me and the other person. I don’t agree fully with the authors-in some ways we have moved on especially in parenting but that said there is enough guidance in this book, that you can apply your own boundaries in places. It does deal with some very sensitive issues that some readers might find hard. For me, it was some wise self-help at a time when I professionally needed it. And actually it has helped my parenting style a bit too! (Sorry kids! 😀)
