About Bram Stoker

Abraham (Bram) Stoker was an Irish writer, best known for his Gothic classic Dracula, which continues to influence horror writers and fans more than 100 years after it was first published. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, in science, mathematics, oratory, history, and composition, Stoker' s writing was greatly influenced by his father' s interest in theatre and his mother' s gruesome stories about her childhood during the cholera epidemic in 1832. Although a published author of the novels Dracula, The Lady of the Shroud, and The Lair of the White Worm, and his work as part of the literary staff of The London Daily Telegraph, Stoker made his living as the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and the business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London. Stoker died in 1912, leaving behind one of the most memorable horror characters ever created.

Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery: In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar Asmundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker’s world-famous 1897 novel Dracula. Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, "Powers of Darkness"), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself. Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker's preface to the book. However, no one looked beyond the preface and deeper into Asmundsson’s story. "Dracula" is an epistolary Gothic horror novel written in 1897 by Bram Stoker, an Irish author who became famous after writing about the vampire named Count Dracula, who later on had many interpretations (theater, movie and television). Dracula was the first significant vampire in literature and has served as a template for all the vampires who have come after him.

Stoker visited the seaside town of Whitby in England in 1890 and found inspiration for his excellent novel "Dracula". Before writing it, Stoker met the Hungarian writer Ármin Vámbéry, who was also a traveller and told dark stories about the Carpathians, inspiring Stoker, who then spent a few years researching on European mythological stories and folklore about vampires.

The novel narrates the story of Dracula, who attempts to move from Transylvania and go to England to find some new blood and try to spread the curse of the undead. It also tells the story of the fight between Dracula and a group of men and women who had Professor Abraham Van Helsing as their leader. The text of "Dracula" is made of diary entries, telegrams, letters, journal and newspaper clippings.

Harker escapes the castle after discovering that Dracula is a vampire, and the Count moves to England and plagues the seaside town of Whitby. A small group, led by Abraham Van Helsing, hunt Dracula and, in the end, kill him.

Dracula was mostly written in the 1890s. Stoker produced over a hundred pages of notes for the novel, drawing extensively from Transylvanian folklore and history. Some scholars have suggested that the character of Dracula was inspired by historical figures like the Wallachian prince Vlad the Impaler or the countess Elizabeth Báthory, but there is widespread disagreement. Stoker's notes mention neither figure. He found the name Dracula in Whitby's public library while holidaying there, picking it because he thought it meant devil in Romanian.
