Insanity has me by the throat. I wish it’d squeeze a little harder.
They call me crazy, but who are they to judge? I’m not crazy. They are. I’ve tried to reason with them, but they won’t listen. Yet. One day, they will hear me, and one day, they’ll be sorry.
This is no way to live, being locked up like an animal. And I’m surrounded by lunatics. The scary girl in the corner who hears voices, the burly bald guy who lashes out with violent tendencies, the quiet redhead who lights fires, or the Rob Zombie look-alike that is rumored to have murdered his entire family. Is this real or one sick and twisted nightmare I can’t wake up from?
Institutionalized is the latest anthology from the creators of The Better Off Dead series. This installment brings you stories of the mentally unbalanced, the damaged and disturbed, and the criminally insane. Some are locked up. Some are not. We recommend you sleep with one eye open.
With stories by Richard Chizmar, Ronald Kelly, R.E. Sargent, Steven Pajak, Rebecca Rowland, Mike Duke, Scott Harper, Jill Girardi, Richard Clive, Jeremy Megargee, Janine Pipe, LP Hernandez, Scotty Milder, Renee M.P.T. Kray, Brandon Scott, and David Rider.
Stanley Wiater Zadok Mitchem is hailed as the world’s greatest sleight of hand artist and a showman supreme around the globe, until an “accident” takes him away from the bright lights forever. Amid despair, he watches as his universe crumbles, pushing away everyone who’s ever loved him, until the title: Zadok the Great and Powerful, has become a distant fragment of a past life. Yet, when a mysterious offer grants him his place back on the stages of the world, Zadok enters a whole new life of power and fame.
Who are the two men that enter his dreams, offering redemption as the Dead march past? Who is the hooded woman who leads him through the Ghost Zone against his will?
In the land of Vodou, all gifts come with a high price. Will Zadok regain his place on the main stage, captivating the masses into stunned silence? Or will the King of Sleight lose everything for all eternity?
UNDER A NIGHT SKY…
The smell of popcorn and hotdogs fill the air against the sounds of children’s laughter. Damballah, the long forgotten Elder God of Vodou, and his wife Ayida have chosen the quiet life, owning a carnival of delights, shooing children from the restricted areas and raking in the money. It was to be an eternity of peace, until visions of a man possessing unfathomable power, plagues his thoughts. A man who bends the forces of Vodou unto his command, filling Damballah’s mind with glimpses of Vegas and of a woman…
Zadok, The Great and Powerful is to embark on the biggest show of his life. His comeback is lining up to beat Vegas odds and his future with Della is in his grasp, but fate has more than a few cards up its sleeve. Finding himself pulled into a macabre game of cat and mouse, Zadok’s powers are tested to the limit by an ancient deity with only one path to walk…

He would become a reaper of souls; his charge? Collect “the Bad Ones.” As Jack sets out on the road to acquire from his list the soul of cult leader John Haley, he stumbles onto a forbidden ritual, and there, at the heart of it, is the ancient Resurrection Amulet, the very object that saw him cursed so long ago.
Now Jack is pulled into a mystery, a conflict that threatens to tear the entire Vodou culture apart at its core. This is a tale of a dark spiritual underground, of redemption and temptation, where strength of character and newfound friendship are tested by betrayal and greed. This is the world of Vodou.
Come along as these tales open up 19 gates into hell and experience the supernatural, the darkness of night, and the unimaginable like never before. Authors such as Byron Craft, Matthew V. Brockmeyer, Rich Restucci and many more have come together to show you in. . .and they won't let you leave until you're crying out for mercy, begging to live to see one last sunset.
What are you waiting for? The gates are opening.
