Once again Joe is dealing with his wife who worries about him, his girls who think he's a relic of another time and federal agencies that don't respect him, let alone the rights of the citizens of Saddlestring, Wyoming. Or any citizens, for that matter.
When Joe is forced to help hunt down the father of his daughter's best friend, things don't go well. They go south. And they go up into the mountains with their rough terrain and vast expanses of beetle kill pines.
Fans of this series are used to watching the moral and physical battles Joe wages with not only criminals but all levels of the law and government. This installment finally finds common sense at the helm of the local sheriff's office, but that can't help Joe when the guys from the EPA decide to makes up the rules as they go.
Joe, of course, will be Joe. And that's what we love about him. Watching Game Warden Pickett 'go rogue' in the name of what's right is what keeps me coming back. And did I worry about all that beetle kill that's as dry and combustible as Joe's almost absent friend, Nate? I live in the Rocky Mountain west and totally appreciate it's ramifications...and of course I appreciate Nate.
Nate and Joe's relationship has taken a beating over the course of the last few books, and they are both changed men. But I'm hopeful future installments will bring them closer. We'll see. On to #14!
Breaking Point was no exception. Heart pounding rush to the finish kept me on the edge of my seat. Again, I had an inkling as to the final resolution but was surprised nonetheless by the final details.
Love love love the Picketts, Nate, and the cast of colorful folks who populate all the books.
The only problem, and this has nothing to do with the author or publisher, is the amazon kindle version which I bought. It works well on my mobile devices, and on the web-based access, but bombs my kindle for mac application every single time I try to advance past a certain page number. I've diagnosed the problem as with this particular download, not with the application (which is up-to-date), and not with my operating system. Get no such problems with other downloads from amazon, and the problem remains when I re-download the breaking point for kindle version. I sent a message to amazon about the problem and they didn't even bother responding with any guidance. So, unless I view the book via my iPod touch or via web-access to my kindle account, I can't read this particular book on my Mac or PC-based kindle application. Amazon, you have a problem here and need to fix it!!

For the uninitiated, Joe Pickett is a game warden in Wyoming who has a very firm sense of right and wrong that sometimes puts him at odds with the deskbound bureaucrats (Joe loves the outdoors aspect of his job). In this book two Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agents are shot while delivering a notice to a local man clearing his land to build a home for his family. Assumed guilty without a trial, the man heads for the hills he loves and a huge, EPA-led, manhunt ensues. Joe senses something essentially wrong in the whole affair but is unable to escape involvement, with individuals vying for position and power instead of justice. The truth of the matter gradually unfurls, but not before events escalate alarmingly to a really shocking, satisfying conclusion, preceded by a roller-coaster sequence of events and excitement as nature shows her raw power. Even more dreadful is the author's note that the basis of the plot is a true story of big-brother manipulation (though not in Wyoming). C.J. Box lives in Wyoming and his descriptive skills all but transport the reader to the mountains and forests. A wonderfully absorbing series to delight the cowboy in us all. For under £3.00, this is a gem that could be a great introduction to a new protagonist and an author's work worth exploring further.

I do have a problem with Joe Pickett though in that he is, at the end of the day, just a glorified game warden....and even though he can take on the might of the Federal Agencies he still doesn't come across as a strong enough character although he is obviously full of moral values. He would be no match for the likes of Reacher, Bosch, or even Elvis Cole out of his hillbilly mountain environment ( even with his mate Nate....again reminiscent of Elvis Coles background, hard man, sidekick Joe).
Yest I quite enjoyed it but it didn't hit the spot like some of his ilk. Still a respectable three stars though.

If I bothered to think about it I might notice that the stories can be a little formulaic, but each has a freshness that lifts it above all that. Joe's openness & dedication always brings him into conflict with his politically aspiring superiors, but it is those qualities which ultimately vindicate him.
I have read everything I can find by C J Box & always hunger for more.
