Terrible. Not worth watching for any reason.

Leading man John Gavin called the film a "turkey" saying Sophia Loren playing a princess was "not what she does best.
The film was part of a three-picture deal, which Loren had, under contract with Paramount. It was also a co-production between Paramount and producers Ponti and Girosi. Filming started on 1 June 1959 in Vienna. In part because Loren was at odds with Curtiz's direction, Italian director Vittorio De Sica was hired to reshoot certain scenes with Loren after hours without Curtiz's knowledge.

John Gavin, who had been borrowed from Universal, later recalled, "we were being directed by Michael Curtiz, which sounds so good on paper." Apparently, he soon realized the director was past it.

I said to Sophia [during the shoot], "We're in a terrible picture. He may have been a great director once but he doesn't know what he's doing."

According to Gavin, Sophia had looked worried and asked, "do you really think so?"

Said Gavin, "The next thing I know Vittorio de Sica is turning up on set, at 2:00am every morning to give Sophia a few hours coaching before shooting started. Imagine! Drama classes at that hour! Still, I wouldn't have minded a little help myself. So I asked him and he said 'Don't change a thing. Everything you do is so American.' That sort of left me up in the air without a compass."

Miss Loren in an acceptable version of Molnar's "Olympia"
Verified purchase
Fluffy costumer with Sophia Loren, based on Ferenc Molnar's "Olympia" (and originally filmed in 1929 as "His Glorious Night").

Beautiful and unorthodox Princess Olympia (Sophia Loren) throws tradition to the wind and falls in love with handsome American industrialist Charlie Foster (John Gavin).

Fine supporting performances from Maurice Chevalier as Prince Philip and a striking Angela Lansbury as Countess Lina. With Isabel Jeans in a delightful cameo. As one would expect, the costumes are sumptuous; both Miss Loren and Miss Lansbury look radiant in their array of gowns. The DVD offers no extras whatsoever, but the 16:9 transfer looks a treat.

They don't make them like this anymore!

Movies like this prove that it's possible to make romantic comedies that are clean and decent. Sometimes I enjoy a movie more the second time I watch it and that was the case with this one. I enjoyed the humor and the scenery was breathtaking. The costume design really added to my enjoyment, too. The movie caught my interest in the beginning and I enjoyed every minute of it thereafter.

A Sweet escape

This is nothing more than a beautiful escape without pretending to be anything more than that. It's not an awards contender, it's not a masterpiece, it's not anything more than a nice little film to enjoy on a rainy afternoon. John Gavin however is probably never been better than he was in this piece. In so much of his work he was stiff and a bit cardboardy but here he's much more relaxed and with his protaganist being Sophia Loren how couldn't he be. Sophia plays every note as if it were orchestrated. She's perfect for this light piece of fluff.

The product was received as promised and the condition was excellent. The reproduction had no flaws. Shipping was timely.

A movie from memory, well done without being overdone. Liked the story and the acting. It's a lightweight but entertaining. This film was of personal significance and finally found its way to my collection. I'm a Sophia Loren fan and enjoy her portrayals. If you are to, then try this one.
