Kendra Elliot has landed on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list multiple times and is the award-winning author of the Bone Secrets, Callahan & McLane, and Mercy Kilpatrick series. She is a three-time winner of the Daphne du Maurier Award, an International Thriller Writers finalist, and an RT Award finalist. She has always been a voracious reader, cutting her teeth on classic female heroines such as Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and Laura Ingalls. The story, in its entirety could have been published in one book and at a fraction of the cost (the sum of the four novellas exceeded most books). I am not a fan of using novellas to build a story.
NUMBER OF HEARTS: 4 1/2
Cate Wilde and Tessa Black are determined to find out what happened to her childhood friend Sam. They found a new clue after 20 years. The next step is to speak to the land owner where Sam’s necklace was found. But before that they must find the driver of a hit-n-run accident that left a local dead.
Cate and Tessa thought that they were prepared to find the truth of Sam’s disappearance but they could never know the path that they would take to find that truth.
Bred in the Bone is the fourth novella in the Widow’s Island series that is written by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. If you haven’t read the first two novellas Close to the Bone and A Bone to Pick I would highly suggest you go get these and read them. You could pick up novella three and start her but the first two novellas give you the back story of Tessa & Cate. I am already looking forward to reading the next two installments in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & Montlake Romance in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
There could have been more between Rosa's declaration and the trip to the mainland.
I missed Logan not having a part to play. But was excited to meet new characters I hope to see again.
I'll revisit Widows Island again & again.
Can't wait to see what's in store for book #5.
Since book 1, Cate, an FBI agent on medical leave, and Tessa, a Widow's Island deputy sheriff, have never forgotten the fact that the third teenager in their group of "sisters" went missing on a night when they refused to join her on one of her escapades. They are continually on the lookout for clues to her disappearance.
This book starts with the hit/run death of a man on a bicycle. The driver of the vehicle confesses before Cate and Tessa even think she might be involved. She states that the victim was going to "hurt my son." My, my, my - most people on Widow's Island were not even aware Rosa Underwood, owner of Cheater's Book Store, had a son.
Oops! Now the hit and run begin to become intertwined with the disappearance of Cate's and Tessa's friend, Samantha. Where will this lead? After 20 years, there is little hope for a complete resolution, but if they could just ascertain what happened to her Sam.
I would have loved to see the relationship of these three people/events, Brad Gill's death, Travis Underwood, the virtually unknown son of the owner of the bookstore, and Samantha Bishop, the missing friend of Cate and Tessa, were interwoven before Samantha went missing. Unfortunately, we are not party to that history. Thus 4 stars instead of 5.
I read everything Melinda and Kendra Elliot write, both individually and together. This has been a very interesting series. I can't wait for book 5, which I have already ordered.
The author's development of the characters deepens even more, especially for Cate and Henry. The slow start lays a good foundation as the thrilling storyline and plot explode into an unpredictable ending.
I find these novellas a great break from longer, more convoluted books because the fast read makes the reading experience enjoyable in one setting. I look forward to the next installment.
Great characters and the perfect end to this novella. Thank you ladies!!
