Broken Dreams by Cassidy K. O'Connor is an emotional young adult coming of age story about the possibility of reclaiming second chances. Isabelle and her twin brother Ian are excited to finally graduate high school. Isabelle wants to dance at Julliard and Ian has soccer scholarships to the colleges of his choice. But Isabelle knows a secret about her twin brother. His plans aren't to go to college and play soccer. He wants to join the Army and make a difference in the world.

When tragedy strikes, it is up to Isabelle to carry on the memory of her brother through the legacy he meant to leave behind. She is determined to put her own dreams aside so that she can fulfill the dreams her brother had of honor and service and dedication. But when tragedy strikes a second time, Isabelle isn't sure she's strong enough to continue. All she wants is a second chance to reach for her dreams. And she'll need the love and support that she finds in an unexpected relationship to carry her through this emotional journey.

This is a very beautiful and emotional story that will threaten even the most hardened reader with tears. It is part romance and part coming of age story, but mostly it is about life and loss and what makes a person endure when they just want to give up. What is important to some people is hard for others to understand, and that is some of the exploration of grief that readers can expect in this story.

Broken Dreams was my first YA romance book. I was inspired by the power of the emotions author John Green was able to bring to a YA audience in a contemporary story. Broken Dreams was a departure from some of my other romance novels and novellas in that I wanted to bring Isabelle to a place where life seemed to have torn her down. I wanted readers to connect with Isabelle in their own ways but ultimately understand the pain she had gone through. I wanted to take readers to where Isabelle was and feel her pain so that they could then feel her strength return and feel empowered along with her.

This was an okay read, but I agree with another commenter who said the relationships and characters weren't developed as well as they could have been. There are references to 17/18 year olds having sex (nothing graphic or explicit, but it's not glossed over) and underage drinking, but neither is glorified. The female lead dealing with the impact of a traumatic injury was not gone into in great detail, but it wasn't made all rosy and perfect either - I especially liked that she showed fam

For me, the thing that derailed the story was the sister going to fulfill her brother's dream of joining the Army.

Spoilers follow:

The author notes in the beginning of the book that she did research military stuff, but that she made changes to tell the story she wanted to tell. However, I feel like she went too far on the vague factor when it came to the female lead's military time - she never even tells us what kind of job she has in the military, or where's she's stationed (it's always called "the base" and it seems to be the same place that she did her training). The military part just didn't work at all, and basically is only there to provide the major trauma of the story - I think the same thing could have been accomplished by letting her join the Peace Corps.

I also found the whole idea that Somalia is, in any way, a peaceful place to be a little jarring.

There's no real clues to tell you when the book takes place, other than a few pop-culture references, which I found distracting.

This is a beautiful story of love, loss, struggles and triumph. It has it all. Isabelle “Izzy” has big dreams to fulfill. Her goals of entering Julliard and becoming a professional ballet dancer are sidelined when tragedy strikes. Her twin brother, Ian, is in a fatal accident that leaves her in a state of grief and uncertainty. She wants to follow her own wishes, but instead decides to pursue an honorable choice by carrying out one of Ian’s aspirations of joining the military to serve his country. It’s touching how Izzy pushes through her grief to fulfill this. Conner was one of Ian’s close friends and has great admiration and adoration for Izzy. At first he keeps these feelings to himself and doesn’t actively pursue her. There are moments in this story that really touch on the human spirit and how much one soul can endure. It’s a great coming of age story with a beautiful theme of honor and commitment. Keep tissues ready for this one. There’s a lot more to this book and the author really takes on tough writing that flows so beautifully. It’s an inspirational and heartwarming story that takes one on an awesome emotional ride.

WOW! This is a fantastic story about courage, love and loss. Cassidy K. O'Connor nailed it with this NA story about how sometimes life is not easy but with a strong will, dreams still can come true. This heart wrenching story pulled at my heartstrings. I experienced every possible emotion as I dived into the pages. I cried, yelled at characters, laughed and cried some more. It is an emotional journey between Izzy and Conner as they deal with life. The characters were perfect, the connection was evident and the story flowed beautifully. I can't say enough good about this story.

I am not one for ugly cry books and let me tell you this is an UGLY cry book, but I had a hard time putting it down (other than to stop crying). How can you not help but feel everything that that poor Izzy is going through with the death of her twin brother.

This is a magnificent story in a new genre for Cassidy K. O'Connor. Broken Dreams is a story full trials,strength, endurance, and a real look at how people handle tragedy. There are so many messages in this story you don't want to miss. I loved that you saw the characters go through strong periods and weak periods. The story is beautiful, gut wrenching, and be prepared to cry tears of sorrow and tears of pure joy. I love that Izzy takes us on her journey from high school, to the military, Julliard, and her relationship with her brother's best friend Ian. I hope to see more from Cassidy and this family. Brianna would make a great read as she was a complex character but a favorite one of mine.
