Even before our heroes discovered a portal to other realms, Jak Freedar wanted to seek out powerful allies to help overthrow the tyrannical wizard rulers of his home world. Instead, he chanced across a dragon egg and is now the surrogate father of a hatchling.
Since he found the egg, taking care of the young dragon is his responsibility. Even as King Uthari forces the team to prepare for another mission, Jak must do his best not only to care for the hatchling but to keep it safe from those who want to use it for their own gain.
As he soon learns, it’s not only the wizards of his own world who would love to control a dragon. It turns out that powerful enemies in other realms want a hatchling too. And they’re willing to kill for it.

I have a hard time caring for the characters when they are constantly curb stomped by NPC's who just pop up with even more ridiculous immunities and power that make the "good guys" current power irrelevant. Not to mention the frequent use of magic to stun or freeze the actions of characters. It's just not very fun reading.
I don't care for the constant perspective shifting between different characters. After awhile I found myself just skipping over pages to get to the parts that actually moved the story along.
For two weeks in age, Shikari is both an inquisitive, playful new baby and amazingly precocious, thankfully. While Jak and Zidarr Malek plus the elder (good) dragon foundling, Shikari, seem to be the primary characters in this story, it has many subthemes and a multitude of characters, each with his or her own personality and skills.
Like almost all books by Lindsay Buroker, I loved this series and wish it would go on past the forthcoming fourth book. Her characters are always interesting and, for the most part, likeable.
The exceptions to being likeable are the villains like Night Wrath and, to a lesser degree, King Uthari and the druids.
She introduced Vran, a somewhat parallel culture on Torvil whose mages are vastly more powerful than on Torvil. Naturally, this fact and the existence of the younger (evil) dragons on Vran set this story up for many adventures.
Meanwhile, back on Torvil, things aren’t idle either, so there are numerous subplots to enjoy there as this book bounces back and forth. Included in the challenges there ae some new magical threats to human life including one major surprise thanks to the druids.
I really enjoy Lindsay Buroker’s characters and imaginative stories.
The mages get a taste of what it feels like to be on the bottom of the power scale while a cute baby dragon is much more than he seems. Our star crossed lovers are barely keeping their distance. My favorite scene is post battle when Malek, Jadora and Jac hold each other in a thank god we are still alive hug.
Big hints for changes to come in the next book as Jadora works closely with Dragon Steel and Vinjo makes gifts for the mercenaries. General Tonovan is never far from Rivlen's thoughts as she gathers her allies plots revenge.
This story covered a brand new world through the portal, some more cranky dragons, and adorable baby dragon who just might be a genius, and the whole crew of friends we've met in the previous books. There are some great battle sequences and great camaraderie amongst the characters that builds the longer they're forced to be together through the danger. I recommend this book if you're looking for an entertaining read of a fantastical world (but definitely start with book one so you know about all the quirkiness of the main characters!!)
Buroker is a master at making each book in a series have its own problem that is resolved at book end while also building tension and adding complications that will carry over in the next book of the series. Amazing! This is one of the reasons she’s a must-read author for me.
Oh, and her quirky, complex characters are the other thing I adore about her books. I would have liked more time with Jak than I got in this book, but I’m loving the development of most of the others.
Waiting for the next book, on the other hand, will NOT be fun.

There are elements of this in the Dragon Gate series but in my view there are currently way too many unredeemably powerful, vile and sadistic characters/ villans manouvering against each other and crushing any discent to their control around. Mundane humans are under the thumb of too many powerful and constantly warring magical kingdoms and there appears to be no end in sight to this control.
Every new planet that is explored via the Dragon Gates slightly advances the lead characters knowledge of the ancient dragon culture but seem to contain either similarly sadistic power blocks to the 'first world' or the 'crabby' bad dragons controlling what has become a wasteland.
Some of the viler characters really need to be removed in the next book for me to willingly continue reading this series.

The saga of the Dragon Gate develops into three sided internecine warfare between foreign druids, warrior mages fighting for their kingdoms, and the mundane humans caught in the middle. And dragons, oh my!
A tale of heroic deeds, thwarted romance, imperious rulers, and mercenaries, with all the characters vibrantly described as they leap off the page into your imagination. A book, no an entire saga, that cannot be put down.
