4.0 out of 5 starsThe clousure I needed!
Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2019
Oh my god, I really didnt know how much I had missed Mare, Cal and evangeline until i read this book. SO MANY FEELINGS! This is what clousure feel like, we got to read about the aftermath of what happened in War storm, I’m greedy so i wish we could have more in detail of how the next several years developed but I guess that would require a few extra book. I laugh reading Firelight Cal and Mare could never be boring! I did almost cry on that last chapter where Cal viisted Maven 😭

******SPOILERS AHEAD******

I’m so happy Kilorn will have a brillant future and Mare and call lived long enough to see their kids grow. OMG how I wish we could get more stories about them as parents! It would have been hilarious!
I’m content knowing the Mare and Cal got the HEA and that will be enough. I’m sad we might never get new stories about these dear characther, its always been a well written story but so many emotions. I feel sad its over but its certainly a story worth reading many times over.

3.0 out of 5 starsThe ending that could have easily been in epilogue of the last book
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019
After being disappointed in where things left off in the last book, I was excited to read this to get more closure. With that being said, I can’t honestly give a full review of the book because I skipped over quite a bit.

There were at least 3 f words (from the parts I read) which I found annoying because even if it’s a “new world” language like that doesn’t fit the time period imo, but to each their own.
I was more interested in what happened to the main characters than any history—with how long the other books were I felt like I had enough background.

The section with new characters was interesting, but honestly was not necessary I felt. However, I liked them much better than Evangeline’s section. I felt she already had her happy ending and would have rather more time to be given to Mare, so I skimmed over hers to get the main idea.

Mare and Cal’s section takes place two months after the 4th book and is in the last 20ish percent of the book.

In the end, readers will be happy with the idea of Mare and Cal ending up together, but will be disappointed if they were expecting any descriptive details with dialogue as to their life together, which is summed up within a few paragraphs.

1.0 out of 5 stars The final nail in the red queen series coffin
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2020

Let me start with the first 3 books. None of them created equal but all of them having enough trama and plot to keep most of the readers engaged. Then comes War Storm, most of the fans were beyond excited to know what finally happens not only Cal and Mare but also a lot if the secondary characters that captivated our souls like Evangeline. The book delivers little and at points feels like Victoria isn't even the writer anymore. Ending was super rushed too. Book 5 is and makes me so mad to say this, is the worst book of the series. The characters that ultimately get you to a happy place are located at the very end of the book. Tbh this last chapters could've been part of War storm. I feel disappointed about this. So much anticipation for this historical lesson for the Kingdoms. Money grab 100%

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected

First a note on the format: I read this book on kindle, so the formatting was weird. Things that I assume were written as footnotes (or margin notes, maybe?) ended up at the end of paragraphs without any clue to what precisely they referred to, so you just had to kind of guess. At first, the book reads like something Julian has compiled, but that falls away and the. You just don’t know anymore. I assume the print version would have had clearer textual markers, but the kindle version is sloppy.

As to the content? I probably wouldn’t have paid the full price. There’s a short story about Coriane, one about Farley, and one about another Silver and Red duo that takes place peripherally to some other events, but doesn’t contain anyone from the others. While it’s interesting, it’s more like the start of an adventure novel rather than anything that can really stand on its own. Another portion of the book, maybe the last 28% is Mare and Cal, and as others said, it would have been better suited as an end to the fourth book, rather than that bizarre ending we had. However, don’t go in expecting closure in the story. There is a *bit* of closure in the last 2% that goes into what happens briefly (like a wiki article on the next 20 years of Montfort/Norta/Lakeland’s wars) but basically it’s just a few sentences.

I loved the original 4 books, and own the kindle versions, but unless you are a completist, I would just check this one out at the library. It’s probably better in that format anyway. While I understand the author’s desire for the characters to be realistic and complex, it’s still fiction and most people want things to be ended in a satisfying way. We live in reality that can be unsatisfying, so we read fiction that places it’s characters in difficult or horrific situations because we want to see them overcome them - because it gives us the readers a sense of overcoming too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Closure Everyone Needed

I think that everyone who finished War Storm felt unsatisfied and hoodwinked with the abrupt, confusing ending (I was shaking my Kindle like "Where's the rest?!?". But Broken Throne provided the closure that I felt was missing from War Storm. As always the writing was beautiful, creating images and feelings familiar and unknown. I also liked the side stories to see how this war affected others and how that was also shaping the rest of the world.

Although a lot of people probably glanced through the histories, I enjoyed reading it and getting more backstory to the formation of this world (even the foreshadowing of how climate changed messed it up).

I'm just glad I got to hear about everyone for one last time--to see and feel like everything was going to work out in the end. Sad to see the series end but I loved it!!

1.0 out of 5 stars this book was weird

The Novella about Cal’s mom was a great addition. The novella of Farley was 100% pointless, she didn’t even go into the rift between Farley and her father.
Then the two new characters?? That was weird and not needed. What happened to them?
This book was so technical and annoying and I thought I would never finish it. The last 20% of the book is what was only needed. The other was like a history book and weird.
Sorry honestly after the first book, this series went down fast. I felt like I was reading a history book about war most of the time.
I probably won’t read anymore of her books because of how she wrote these. She left so much unsaid and what was said was kind of pointless.
Also in this book she spent so much time on the Samos. Completely utterly pointless.
I’m so glad I’m through with this series! I kept hoping she would do something amazing, like fix Maven. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
Oh well, on to better books, hopefully.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinda Disappointing

Let me start by saying that I loved the Red Queen series and probably had too high of expectations for this follow-up book. Although it was moderately interesting to see different sides of the war from different characters, overall it was a bit of a let down. I may have just gone into the book with too high of expectations. Don't expect to have a lot of follow-up for Mare / Cal's story. You get little hints of the aftermath of the last book, but it felt like it was forced.

I LOVE this series. I love every bit of it. Every time I read a book in this series, I have so many tabs hanging out of the sides that I run out. There are lines I love and clues I'm watching. There is so much here about how to change the world and people's minds and how we handle major changes in society. It's amazing and beautiful and I love all the characters-- even the ones I hate. There is so much depth here and the order of these short stories? The pieces of this collection? Amazing. Make us wait until the very end for all the things that we crave most. I devoured the last 100 or so pages last night because I finally found what I'd been dying to have! I cannot wait to see what Aveyard does next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost satisfying wrap up

Some of the beginning was difficult to page through. The dairy format is difficult to follow but the information is necessary. Finally!!! More of Evangeline. I love that her character has developed from this one note, self absorbed metal princess, to someone with fears, love, and maybe kindness. If you’re looking for a wrap up of Cal and Mare, hold your breath. Probably the most disappointing moment, just a foot note as to the direction their reunion went. *sigh*

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Collection of Novellas and Short Stories

As difficult as this series was to read, this novella collection, although I think it was unnecessary, actually answered some burning questions and gave a very welcoming send off to the entire Red Queen series. Sometimes novellas are weak and some are great and others you sit there wondering, "Why". This collection had a mix of all 3. Enjoyed some, disliked others, and left wondering why this one. All in all, the series is finally over and I am interested to see what Victoria Aveyard has in the works next.
