How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 starsAuthentic Brother Ink Cartridges
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017
Oringinal Brothers refills. I decided it wasn't worth the risk to try an off brand. My first purchase since purchasing the printer 4 months ago. My only issue was with the yellow refill that would not be recogized by the printer. In my efforts to remove/resert I found I was unable to eject or remove the cartridge manually. Long chat with Brother and a trip to a registered Brother technician and now I am good to go......with the same yellow cartridge. Something was wrong in the cartridge that interfered with proper alignment. Hopefully this was a fluke and not a repeatable issue with refills.

1.0 out of 5 starsBrother printers are junk
Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2018
I quickly ran through the starter ink cartridges that came with the printer. Even though the ones that came with the printer still had ink in them, the printer was refusing to print. I looked up on line that you can fake the printer out by placing some black tape over the clear window of the ink cartridge so did that to try to use all of the ink. Eventually, I had to buy new cartridges and I was OK with that and the shenanigans I had to play to get the last of the ink out of the old ones. I replaced my cartridges with the new ones and didn't use the printer for about 2 months. When I come back to print something, the printer says it won't print because it is out of ink!!!! I look at the cartridges and they have almost all run dry. I didn't even use the new cartridges, just had them sitting in the printer! What a POS! I will never buy another ink jet printer. I thought this nonsense had stopped in the 90s, but I guess not. I probably will never buy another Brother printer either. What jerks?! Between the cartridges saying they are out of ink when they clearly are not, to ink just evaporating from the cartridge, to the nonsense with firmware updates that check to make sure you are buying "authentic" Brother cartridges. They can keep their printers and ink. It wasn't even a very good printer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quickly Disappears Without Actually Being Used

I literally put this ink into my printer less than a week ago. After printing ONE SINGLE PAGE of color, my printer notified me that it was low on ink. The next page I printed in color was streaky and uneven. The printer I have won't let me print pages in BW if any of the ink is empty, even the color- it won't even scan to the computer if the ink is too low. But I cannot afford to buy this package of ink every fortnight- especially if I can only get one good page out of it.

Works well with my Brother printer, however I feel that the ink quantity is low. I bought this in March and its already saying it's low. I do not use my printer often, especially to print in colors. The MFC- J480DW forces you to buy the color ink if it is finished because it will not let you print in black if you do not replace the color cartridge.

3.0 out of 5 stars Save some money

Don’t get me wrong, these are perfectly good refills. It’s the price that gets to me. Ink jet cartridges never last all that long, and I swear these are worse than some of the “cheap” knock offs. Buy these enough times (and I’m not talking that many), and you can buy a new printer. So, if you’re worried about the warning all ink jet printers give you when not using their brand, ignore it.

Update: I had been using an off-brand again when it told me I needed Yellow. As it happened, I had a set of Brother ink cartridges, so I used the yellow from that. Guess what, I’m completely out of yellow again, but still have some color left in the off-brand cartridges! I noted that one person showed an image indicating that all of his/her colors were full except the yellow. I don’t know if this is normal or the printer itself that uses so much yellow.

I’m not saying you won’t ever run into a problem, but over the years, using many different off brands, I’ve never had anything go wrong.

3.0 out of 5 stars New cartridges completely emptied by cleaning
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2018

Well, I wanted to put 1 or 2, but I'm not sure it's really the ink that's the problem. The original ink I put in when I got my new MCF-J680DW clogged up and ran out when I tried to clean out the nozzles, so I put in these 3 new cartridges (sorry; don't recall where I bought 'em), and cleaned the nozzles again, and bam! all 3 are empty -- so it doesn't matter now whether the nozzles are clean or not because I'm out of ink. I think they should a) put enough ink in the cartridges to complete a cleaning cycle without emptying brand new ink cartridges, b) have a cleaning routine that doesn't use 3 entire new cartridges of ink , and c) fix the nozzles so they don't get that clogged in the first place!

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely bad experience
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2016

Absolutely bad. It is written on the box that it can be used with MFC-J480DW, the printer manufactured by the same company (Brother) as the ink. But in fact the printer does not detect it. More than that, the web site of Brother and communication with that company confirmed that it's not compatible with the printer. I leave it to the readers of the review to conclude whether the manufacturer knowingly placed a wrong information on the product to mislead the buyers. In my case the retailer (Amazon) did not have much choice but to refund which was done with typical for Amazon efficiency and politeness.

Will never buy any brother products ever again. My printer said it cannot detect any of the color inks for months! I've printed less than 50 pages since owning this printer (non of which were colored!) I bought new ink because I was told by a specialized that doing so would be the best option. It worked for one day and all the toner has leaked all over my printer and I have to buy new ones AGAIN. Im selling the entire thing. I was hoping to get some work done this weekend but this damn printer has delayed that once more. PLEASE go with another company,

3.0 out of 5 stars Try a tape hack before replacing "empty" cartridges
Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2019
Size: LC2013PKS C/M/YVerified Purchase
First off, amazon had the lowest price and the product arrived just fine. The cartridges are easy to install and the print quality is good, no complaints there.

My gripe is how little ink these cartridges seem to contain. All I did was clean the printer head and send a test print, and the ink sensor started to show it was empty! And my printer won't print anything if any of the 3 color and black cartridges and are low or empty, so I was scratching my head wondering whether I'd really have to shell out for another 3 cartridges so soon.

Before you buy these cartridges, try searching for a masking tape hack and testing whether the color ink is really on empty. In my case, taping the sensor window did the trick. Turns out, the color ink wasn't empty and printed beautifully.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only two of the three cartridges worked
Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2020

While printing holiday items on December 15, I needed to replace ink cartridges that were running low. Having anticipated this, I was prepared -- or so I thought. I opened this 3 cartridge pack and began replacing the cartridges in my printer. All worked as expected except the Cyan LC201C. Upon inserting this cartridge my printer gave the message "wrong cartridge" I pulled it out and reinstalled it only to get the same "wrong cartridge" message. After many tries and inspections of my printer I at last gave up and had to put my Christmas printing on hold until a fresh set of cartridges could arrive in the mail which, as I learned, will be Saturday at the earliest, too late for my Christmas printing and mailing. This was a set of three brand new cartridges that I received on Monday and removed from their sealed plastic wrapping on Wednesday. They are absolutely the correct cartridges for my printer, I made sure of that when ordering, and I have ordered the exact same set for years. The other cartridges in he 3-pack worked fine, the Magenta, the Yellow, and also the black cartridge which I purchased as a single item on the same order. Only the Cyan will not work, my printer reports "wrong cartridge" even though it is a Brother Innobella cartridge of the correct type for my printer, a Brother MFC J480DW. There is clearly some fault in the manufacture of this cartridge, as the one it was to replace, the exact same LC201C, is recognized by my printer but of course it's empty, which is the entire reason why I bought a set of new cartridges for my traditionally large Christmas printing. I am trying as hard as I can to refrain from using profanity, but I am extremely unhappy with this issue. If there is any way on earth that you can get an Innobella LC201C or LC203C (Cyan) cartridge to me before Saturday the 19th I will be most grateful
